Hello,

If it is possible, I would appreciate it if someone would help me clean up my Windows 7 [ desktop ] PC a little bit.

The issue is about a week ago I noticed that my gaming [desktop] takes about 3 minutes to shutdown. This is the main thing that is weird on it.

The startup time on the PC is okay: about 45 seconds to 1 minute.

My Windows 7 [ laptop ] shuts down in 17 seconds and is also on a standard HDD. So I think something is wrong with it.

I have looked up the following information on my own but am not sure where to go from here.

These are videos so if you need to look at something carefully please hit the pause button.

Speccy:

Event Viewer:

If this is too much trouble to mess with, I am capable of reinstalling the operating system.

Thank you.

Jenna

Hello Jenna91,

Use Ctr - Alt - Del to open the task manager the next time you shut down the computer and you will be able to see what if anything is still running.

Hi again Phill. Task manager view during shutdown:

I couldn't get it to focus well on the text but it doesn't look like any one thing is hanging to me on the task manager? The hang happens when the "shutting down" sign is displayed.

I labeled as many as I could make out. If you want a closer look still just let me know. I can record again and go for a better focus.

Hello Jenna91,

I could be wrong but it would not surprise me if the culprit was Avast, the once highly favoured AV has fallen out of favour with many folk that at one time would recommend it, just like CCleaner has also done.

Question, why have you not yet upgraded to Windows 10 for free while you still can.

Lets check to see if we can spot anything else;

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Avast has fallen out of favour

just like CCleaner

If you have recommended replacements for those programs I would be interested in reading about your suggestions.

why have you not yet upgraded to Windows 10

I have not researched to find out if Microsoft is going to stop providing the free Windows 10 download. I have stayed on Windows 7 so far only as a personal preference. It would probably be good to go to Windows 10 in the future. I agree with you.

Edit: Don't spend 3 or 4 hours on it Phil. I'll probably wipe it and make it a Windows 10 at some point in the future.

Hello Jenna91,

Nothing untoward in Speccy so would leave Avast for now.

Take a look at BleachBit for replacing CCleaner

Try a clean boot to see if that helps and if it does re enable a couple of things at a time to see if anything in particular causes the problem to return.

All I can say for sure is that something with avast was wrong and reinstalling the antivirus resolved the issue. Right now I have avast on many PC's so I would have never guessed that was the problem. Thank you so much for coming through yet again guys.

Great reference,.. I had the same problem on my Windows 10 pc last few days..I though it might be due to heavy load of files and files on my PC.But, I never suspected my anti-virus guard would be the culprit.. Thanks for sharing
