Diagnose slow laptop please

One more fixlist but this one is quick and won't need a reboot.  Just post the fixlog.  No FRST scan needed. Following often speeds up Win 10 PCs: Search for task schedule... Go to the full post »

You will need a small Phillips screwdriver and something like a credit card to pry off the back.  Watch out for different screw sizes.

Something is still trying to start Skype can you do another FRST scan but uncheck all of the Whitelist boxes first?

Thanks for your reply.

Just for clarity, the FRST scan I ran was:

  • a "scan", not a "fix",
  • the "fixlist.txt" file was absent, and
  • all checkboxes except "Addition.txt" were unchecked

Please see attached results.

Am yet to re-seat RAM.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Search for:

services.msc

hit Enter

Find Avast! Tools.  Right click on it and select Properties then change the Startup Type: to Disabled.

OK.

Repeat for HP Comm Recovery

Uninstall:

Avast Browser

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST

Attached File  fixlist.txt   1.09KB   233 downloads

Run FRST and press Fix
A fix log will be generated please post that

Reboot if the fix doesn't reboot it for you

Run FRST again but this time make sure Addition.txt is checked and hit Scan.  Post both logs.

Hi there, sorry for the delay and thanks for sticking with me.

Attached are the logs.

Re-seating ram was too hard -- wasn't sure how to remove back cover.

Thank you!!

Logs look pretty good.

Could you post the fixlog?

One more fixlist but this one is quick and won't need a reboot.

Attached File  fixlist.txt   440bytes   219 downloads

Just post the fixlog.  No FRST scan needed.

Following often speeds up Win 10 PCs:

Search for

task scheduler

hit Enter

Click on the arrow in front of Task Scheduler Library then

Click on the arrow in front of Microsoft

Click on the arrow in front of Windows

Click on Application Experience.  In the next pane to the right, right click on each Task and Disable.  Should be three tasks.

Click on Customer Experience Improvement Program.  In the next pane to the right, right click on each Task and Disable.  Should be two tasks.

Download OOSU10.exe:

https://www.oo-softw...com/en/shutup10

Download and Save it (You will get a popup while it's downloading.  You can X out of it)
then Right click and Run As Admin.
Allow it to make a System Restore Point.
Click on Actions then on Apply Recommended Settings.

Close the program and reboot.

Rerun the Benchmark and let's see if anything has changed.

https://www.userbenchmark.com

Click on Free Download.  Save the file then right click and Run As Admin.  Close all programs and pause your antivirus before starting.

When it finishes it will open a browser.  Copy the URL and paste it into a Reply.

Hi RKinner,

Sorry for the delay. 2020 and 2021 are turning out to be one heck of a year or two!

I uninstalled Avast as my mother was sick of the nagware. Going to rely on good-old-windows protection, unless you have an alternative suggestion?

There were four applications to disable, not three, so I hope that's okay (see MS application experience.PNG).

Fixlog also attached.

Didn't do the OOSU10 thing as it looked like it may come with extra pop-ups that may confuse my mother.

Benchmark results (had windows antivirus still running): https://www.userbenc...serRun/43449829
previous benchmark runs were:

Overall I think the machine is actually doing much better than when we first started, so I'd be happy to chalk this one up as a win -- thanks to your help! I very much appreciate your time to walk me through these diagnosis tools as well as your thinking on how best to interpret the results.

All the best
