Hi, I'm brand new to this forum and didn't know where else to put this.

All I know is I'm also very new to Linux too and unfortunately I'm completely lost here.

Main issue is I cannot seem to connect to my wi-fi without the ethernet cable, I also cannot seem to play DVDs anymore (when I could before with Windows, thinking about going back as soon as I get hold of a copy, Windows I can at least navigate enough to work things out myself) and this is a system I am completely new to that I cannot navigate.

I've Google searched as much as I can and I give up now, don't care if I look dumb to anyone here.

Without some details, it is unlikely you will get the help you need.

For example it would help if we knew ...

  • Which distro (version of LInux) are you using ?
  • How was it installed ?
  • Is it on your hard drive or are you running it from a USB?
  • If on your hard drive, is it the only OS present, or are you dual-booting?
  • What make and model of computer is it on ?

Not all distros are suitable for beginners; in fact most are not. I gave a test-drive to around twenty, and only found two distros worth installing for an XP Pro expat. The pick of the litter is MX Linux. Chosen because of its ease of use, intuitive control panel, user manual, and forum not overrun with the usual uppity critters...whose only hobby seems to be making life difficult for newbies.

Runner up was Linux mint. Second place only because it was slightly less intuitive, making it a bit more difficult to find things. Both Kodachi Linux and TAILS get honorable mention as being beginner friendly, but are not for install, as that defeats their purpose. Check out MX Linux via the links above, and if that is not to your needs, look into Linux Mint.
