See if you have:

c:\windows\system32\logonui.exe

That's the file that handles the logon.

Alternatively try enabling the hidden user account by typing:

net user administrator /active:yes

then reboot and see if you can choose Administrator (no password required)

There is a hotfix that is supposed to help:

https://support.micr...the-logon-proce

Also you can try a system restore from the command line:

See if you have:

c:\windows\system32\logonui.exe

I do have this program

That's the file that handles the logon.

Alternatively try enabling the hidden user account by typing:

net user administrator /active:yes

then reboot and see if you can choose Administrator (no password required)

Same "Logon Process Initialization Failure" if I reboot into safe mode, safe mode w/ command prompt or regular mode

There is a hotfix that is supposed to help:

https://support.micr...the-logon-proce

Hotfix is not available but I found it here (KB2615701)  http://thehotfixshar...lite=+KB2619234

Then it said I also needed KB2619234 which I also downloaded

How do I work with these two files if I cannot log on?

Also you can try a system restore from the command line:

https://blog.pcrisk....-command-prompt

Tried this - same problem

I was able to get it working by using Method 4 (Restoring the registry from backup) from this link: https://www.wintips....n-windows-7/# s

however when I run sfc /scannow it says: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"  I also tried it in Safe Mode - same answer

This guy claims this works:

https://www.infopack...s-wont-complete

Also I have a fix for DISM not working (not used on Win 7 but it probably works on the same services and files)

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv
net stop bits
net start bits
net stop cryptsvc
cd %systemroot%\system32
ren catroot2 catroot2old
net start cryptsvc

if you put the above in a notepad file and Save As "fix.bat" (You need the quotes) then right click on it and Run as admin it might help.

Sometimes this will help:

Tried all the solutions you suggested still having the same problem with SFC getting the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." Also this error at Windows Update: Code 80073712 "Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

Based on what you suggested previously, I was able to run SFC/ SCANNOW at the X drive after going into system repair after deleting two files :

cleanup.xml (which was not there) and pending.xml.  I was also able to direct the results to a text which said that the wimgapi.dll was corrupt on the X drive.  Should I

replace it and if so how would I get to the X drive other than going on the command prompt at system repair?  And could that disrupt the computer's current operation?  .

Thought you might want to see the error messages from SFC ran at the command prompt after starting with F8:

Thought this thread was concluded when I responded to Phillpower.

Two issues after solving the problem by copying the backup registry.  (That was the only thing that worked.  Previously computer would not boot to Windows even in safe mode).

Issues now are SFC/ Scannow - "Windows Resources Protection could not perform the requested operation."  and Windows Update gives error message 80073712.

Would a System Restore work?  Running ok now except for those two errors.

You can try a system repair if you want to.

The errors might be related.  Have you run the

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7

This link is for 64 bit:
https://www.microsof...s.aspx?id=20858

This one for 32 bit:
https://www.microsof...ls.aspx?id=3132

That usually fixes update problems.  Then make sure you have

KB3083710 and KB3102810

https://support.micr...n-us/kb/3083710

https://support.micr...n-us/kb/3102810

If that doesn't work then try Windows Repair all in one:

http://www.tweaking....all_in_one.html

Download it and save it then run it.

My instructions are out of date.  They now have several preset options you can choose.  Doesn't matter which as you can uncheck or check any options before running the fix.  Safe Mode is not required.

Make sure these are checked before hitting Start:

Reset Registry Permissions
Reset File Permissions
Register System Files
Repair WMI
Repair Windows Firewall
Repair Internet Explorer
Repair MDAC & MS Jet
Repair Hosts File
Remove Policies Set By Infections

Repair Icons
Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
Remove Temp Files
Repair Proxy Settings
Unhide Non System Files

Repair Windows Updates
Repair CD/DVD Missing/Not Working

Reboot when done
