That's the file that handles the logon.

 

Alternatively try enabling the hidden user account by typing:

net  user  administrator  /active:yes

then reboot and see if you can choose Administrator (no password required)

 

 

There is a hotfix that is supposed to help:

I was able to get it working by using Method 4 (Restoring the registry from backup) from this link: https://www.wintips....n-windows-7/# s

however when I run sfc /scannow it says: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"  I also tried it in Safe Mode - same answer

Tried all the solutions you suggested still having the same problem with SFC getting the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." Also this error at Windows Update: Code 80073712 "Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

Based on what you suggested previously, I was able to run SFC/ SCANNOW at the X drive after going into system repair after deleting two files :

cleanup.xml (which was not there) and pending.xml.  I was also able to direct the results to a text which said that the wimgapi.dll was corrupt on the X drive.  Should I

replace it and if so how would I get to the X drive other than going on the command prompt at system repair?  And could that disrupt the computer's current operation?  .

Thought this thread was concluded when I responded to Phillpower. 

 

Two issues after solving the problem by copying the backup registry.  (That was the only thing that worked.  Previously computer would not boot to Windows even in safe mode).

 

Issues now are SFC/ Scannow - "Windows Resources Protection could not perform the requested operation."  and Windows Update gives error message 80073712.

 

Would a System Restore work?  Running ok now except for those two errors.

That usually fixes update problems.  Then make sure you have

Download it and save it then run it.

My instructions are out of date.  They now have several preset options you can choose.  Doesn't matter which as you can uncheck or check any options before running the fix.  Safe Mode is not required.

Repair CD/DVD Missing/Not Working

Reboot when done
