Hi all,

I have a laptop that I bought about five years ago that's never really had a lot of use as we tend to only use it as a back up when the desktops are in trouble.

It has a 2.3GHz pentium processor and 8Gb of RAM with a 64 bit operating system.

The strange thing with it is that it's incredibly slow at everything. If I turn it on, it takes over a minute to reach the PIN login page and frequently sounds like there's something large running in the background (lots of quiet chugging sounds and flashing of the disc drive light).

Frequently the problem in these situations is too much old data/applications so I did a complete re-install of the operating system in order to clean things up.

Puzzlingly, this has achieved nothing as it still takes a long time to get anything done on it. I don't think it's the hardware spec, as I recently bought a secondhand desktop with a similar spec and it's lightning fast by comparison.

However, if I've reloaded the operating system and the problem still there, can I safely assume it's not a software problem but a hardware issue? If so, is there I diagnostic that I can run on it to pinpoint the problem?

Thanks in afvance for your help.

Multiple replies are OK.  Best to post a log as you get it.

Get Process Explorer

https://live.sysinte...com/procexp.exe

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Copy the next 2 lines:

TASKLIST /SVC  > \junk.txt
notepad \junk.txt

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:
Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator
Win 8: http://www.eightforu...indows-8-a.html
win 10: http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/

Right click and Paste (or Edit then Paste) and the copied lines should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy and paste the text from notepad into a reply.

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...ownload_speccy/

(Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)
Download, Save and Install it.  Tell it you do not need CCLEANER.    Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving),
File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.
(It will be near the top,  10-20  lines down.) Save the file.  Attach the file to your next post.  Attaching the log is the best option as it is too big for the forum.  Attaching is a multi step process.

First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.

Latency Monitor:

Go to

http://www.resplendence.com/downloads

Scroll down to

System Monitoring Tools

and then find

LatencyMon 6.70 (or it may be a higher number if they update)

Click on Download free home edition

Save it then right click and Run As Admin.  It will install and then start the program.
It will tell you to click on the Start button but there isn't one.
Instead click on the green arrowhead (looks like a Play button).   Let it run for at least 20 seconds.  Then hit the red box to stop it.

Edit, Copy Report text to Clipboard then move to a REPLY and Ctrl + v to paste the text into a reply.

Click on the Drivers Tab.  Click on the column header for "Total execution (ms)" once or twice until the biggest numbers are at the top of the column then take a screen shot (save as type jpg) and attach it.
Click on the Processes tab then click on the  "Hard Pagefaults" column header once or twice until the big numbers are at the top of the column.  Take a screen shot (save as type jpg) and attach it.

Let's get a benchmark:

https://www.userbenchmark.com

Click on Free Download.  Save the file then right click and Run As Admin.  Close all programs and pause your antivirus before starting.

When it finishes it will open a browser.  Copy the URL and paste it into a Reply.

We can also check your hard drive to see if it is up to speed:

HD Tune

https://www.lifewire...-review-2624561

Actual download is at:

http://www.hdtune.co.../hdtune_255.exe

Download, Save, right click and Run As Admin.  Run the Benchmark test and report your min, max & average transfer times (or make a screenshot and post the screenshot).  The fewer programs running at the same time the better.  Pause your anti-virus.

MEASURED INTERRUPT TO USER PROCESS LATENCIES
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The interrupt to process latency reflects the measured interval that a usermode process needed to respond to a hardware request from the moment the interrupt service routine started execution. This includes the scheduling and execution of a DPC routine, the signaling of an event and the waking up of a usermode thread from an idle wait state in response to that event.

Highest measured interrupt to process latency (µs):   114.60
Average measured interrupt to process latency (µs):   4.227661

Highest measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs):       63.80
Average measured interrupt to DPC latency (µs):       1.058666

 REPORTED HARD PAGEFAULTS
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hard pagefaults are events that get triggered by making use of virtual memory that is not resident in RAM but backed by a memory mapped file on disk. The process of resolving the hard pagefault requires reading in the memory from disk while the process is interrupted and blocked from execution.

NOTE: some processes were hit by hard pagefaults. If these were programs producing audio, they are likely to interrupt the audio stream resulting in dropouts, clicks and pops. Check the Processes tab to see which programs were hit.

Process with highest pagefault count:                 compattelrunner.exe

Total number of hard pagefaults                       699
Hard pagefault count of hardest hit process:          692
Number of processes hit:                              6

I'm not aware that I have any antivirus software, so I didn't switch anything off.

So far I can say the Hard drive is good.  Also the PC is running at the right temperature so the heatsink is not clogged with with dust which is common with older laptops.  (PCs slow down when they get hot to protect the CPU)  The Process Explorer log shows you are being nickel and dimed to death.  We want System Idle + the process explorer exe file (procexp64.exe) to add to 90% or better.  Your total is under 58%.  The other major problem you have is the WiFi.  Your router is using channel 11.  The signal strength is only 81 and there are two other signals on channel 11 (both at 75) so there is considerable interference between the three channel.  Routers claim to automatically pick the best channel but I have yet to see one that really does.  If you control the router you can really improve performance by changing the channel selection from Auto to an unused channel.  You can get Inssider to show you a graph of the wireless signals.  Usually it even recommends an idle channel to use:

Download inssider
https://www.techspot...6-inssider.html
Double click to install it. Then run it by right click and Run As Admin.

It will show you a graph in the bottom that has your signal in blue and competing signals in orange and yellow.  It may also recommend a different channel which might have less interference.

Before you run Insidder or make changes to the router you should get a baseline by running a speedtest:

https://www.speedtest.net/

Just press Go and wait for the results.

After you make the changes you can run it again to see if it helped.

If you after the first test you get results equivalent to what your ISP is supposed to be providing you then we are barking up the wrong tree and no changes are required.

Let's see if we can do anything to improve Process Explorer.

First go to Settings and then Update & Security, Check for Updates.  Install anything it finds.

Then let's check your system files:

Open an elevated command prompt:

http://www.howtogeek...-in-windows-10/

(If you open an elevated Command Prompt properly it will say Administrator: Command Prompt in the margin at the top of the window)

Once you have an elevated command prompt:

Type:

 DISM  /Online  /Cleanup-Image  /RestoreHealth

(I use two spaces so you can be sure to see where one space goes.)
Hit Enter.  This will take a while (10-20 minutes) to complete.  Once the prompt returns:

Reboot.  Open an elevated Command Prompt again and type (with an Enter after the line):

sfc  /scannow

This will also take a few minutes.

When it finishes it will say one of the following:

Windows did not find any integrity violations (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them (a good thing)
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them (not a good thing)

If you get the last result then type:

findstr  /c:"[SR]"  \windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log  >  %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

Hit Enter.  Then type::

notepad %UserProfile%\desktop\junk.txt

Hit Enter.

Copy the text from notepad and paste it into a reply.

After you finish SFC, regardless of the result:

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Right-click VEW.exe and Run AS Administrator
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.  (Each time you run VEW it overwrites the log so copy the first one to a Reply or rename it before running it a second time.)

Search for

task scheduler

hit Enter

Click on the arrow in front of Task Scheduler Library then

Click on the arrow in front of Microsoft

Click on the arrow in front of Windows

Click on Application Experience.  In the next pane to the right, right click on each Task and Disable.  Should be three or four (later versions) tasks.

Click on Customer Experience Improvement Program.  In the next pane to the right, right click on each Task and Disable.  Should be two tasks.

Download OOSU10.exe:

https://www.oo-softw...com/en/shutup10

Download and Save it (You will get a popup while it's downloading.  You can X out of it)
then Right click and Run As Admin.
Allow it to make a System Restore Point.
Click on Actions then on Apply Recommended Settings.

Close the program,

See if you can turn off DCOM:

https://forsenergy.c...e061660f1eb.htm

reboot.

Wait at least 5 minutes for Windows to finish its startup housekeeping then create a new Process Explorer log as before.

Hi,

I downloaded Inssider but was unable to run it as admin, so I couldn't make any changes. Can't see what I'm doing wrong here but I did see that there were 2 channels, 1 at 2.4 GHz, another at 5.0 GHz. The first one had 4 things running on it while the second was empty. It would be nice to tap into the empty channel, if possible.

I did the speed test and got about 50mb p s. I need to check this with what my provider claims but that seems a reasonable speed, am I right?

I did the Windows updates (I think there were a couple when I got it to check) and the scannow command identified files that were successfully repaired.

I've attached the two files from Event Viewer and I managed to turn off DCOM.

Finally, I've attached the registry from Process Explorer. I get the feeling that it's 'chugging' a lot less now, so something has worked.

Regards

RSP

Process Explorer looks really good now.

Event logs show an unnecessary one minute delay on startup (after the login).

Log: 'Application' Date/Time: 28/02/2021 10:38:41
Type: Warning Category: 0
Event: 6006 Source: Microsoft-Windows-Winlogon
The winlogon notification subscriber <TrustedInstaller> took 63 second(s) to handle the notification event (CreateSession).

Possibly caused by:

Log: 'System' Date/Time: 28/02/2021 10:37:19
Type: Error Category: 0
Event: 3 Source: MEIx64
Intel® Management Engine Interface driver has failed to perform handshake with the Firmware (FWSTS0: 0x00004181, FWSTS1: 0x16462100).

This seems to be related to a BitLocker security fix.  Doubt you are using BitLocker so I think we can remove the fix (or at least one small part of it).  Supposedly this will do the job.  (Can't test it as I haven't got an intel system to try it on but shouldn't hurt anything.)

Download the attached fixime.reg file.

Attached File  fixime.reg   298bytes   177 downloads

Save it then Right click and MERGE.  Ignore the warning.

Reboot and then run VEW for Applications and System again as before.

PS.  Insidder shows two bands.  The second band is the newer version which your router apparently does not support.  Within each band are a number of different channels.  In the older 2.4 band there are about 14 different channels.  You are on Ch 11 along with two other signals.  I would think something like Ch 3 would be a good choice.  Give me the router make and model and perhaps I can tell you how to change it.

As far as whether 50M is good or not - it depends on your ISP.  I have Spectrum cable and we get 200M.

Hi,

I couldn't run Fixime as admin, the only option I got was 'Merge', so I did that instead.

Two VEW files attached as instructed.

Things are running much better now, by the way. I've no idea what BitLocker is. How could I have come to have it?

The router is a BT Smart Hub 2, is that enough information? Happy to provide more if you want it.

BT doesn't seem to publish much info but they do say the Hub Manager interface is 192.168.1.254 and from some Youtube videos it appears that the password is on a label stuck to the back of the router.

There should be a section for WiFi where you set the SSID name and password.  Usually in the same area will be the channel selection.  This is usually set to Auto and you have to change it to manual then choose the channel you want.  On some your choices are Auto or a channel number.  You will be doing the section on the 2.4 band WIFi  (The 5 band uses bigger channel number and more of them.  It may be possible to turn on the 5 band tho not all PCs and devices can use it.  Some routers can do both at the same time.)
