I have an old 80 gb pata HD that Has some old dos based software that I need badly.  It is showing as a working HD so I don't want to screw it up with this process.  I want to clone it and install it on a newer pc running Windows 10. (both computers are running Win 10 home) I would appreciate some guidance with this project...

Gday.

I think the safest and easiest way would be too.

Get an external drive adapter like this (suggest  powered to be sure it will spin up an IDE drive.) > https://www.tlonghor...ducts_id=269047

find it cheaper on amazone.

Use Macrium the image the drive then recovber the image to a new drive.

Because the contents fo the drive come from a different OS, when you try to access the data, you may get, "permision denied" see this > https://askleo.com/h...sion-to-access/

Hi,

What is the Operating System installed on the 80gb disk? is it real MS-DOS?

Those DOS programs mostly will not work on Windows 10 and old Operating System don't work on recent hardware!

If the programs don't have copy protections In some cases it's possible to copy the files needed by the programs and use something like DosBox, another possibility is to covert the full disk contents to a Virtual Machine but to do that the original HDD must have some Windows Operating System supported by the virtualization product used (VirtualBox, VMWare, etc.).

Thanks for the replies...

The os I have been using on both drives is Windows 10 home....the old software I was referring to has been running fine on the old computer..it is just slow.  I was just speculating it may be a dos based software...(just guessing)

The program is not available anymore and the company is out of business.

BTW, what is the difference in imaging vs cloning?

Sorry I didn't realize that the old 80 gb pata was from a working machine that is running Windows 10 Home.

The are backup software that can create a backup image that contains everything and can restore the image to dissimilar hardware (available only on paid versions), by doing this the Windows activation is usually lost and you need to reactivate and if there is any problem with the original OS it would be transferred to the new machine...

Cloning can be used as backup option but it makes more sense to use it when doing an upgrade from a smaller Disk to a bigger one...

Will Macrium reflect be my best choice?

Macrium reflect should work but the free version can't restore the image to different hardware, only the commercial version.

The free "trial" edition has limitations, the free "Home" editions works the same as the paid for ver, except you cannot deploy remotely  to a different machine.

Unplug the USB stick, uninstall Macrium. Download the stub installer from > https://www.majorgee...ee_edition.html

Run as Admin > 1st screen Download, > 2nd s Next > 3rrd s Next > 4 s Next > 5  s select  Home radio button > click  Next > 6 s Untick registration > click next > 7 s click Next

> 8 s click Install > 9 s click Finish

The main window opens.

Top left > click Create Rescue... > window opens > plug in the USB > select it

Look in the top right window, if it says  " a newer ver available", >> click it > then at the bottom click Build and wait for completion > click OK > click Close.

The main window stays open.

Left menu > click Backup > select Create an image of Partition(s)...

Window opens > select Source Drive > select Destination > at the bottom, > click Finish, > box open, click OK, and wait

Image complete, > click OK > close Window.

At the bottom left of the main window, > Double click the Power Button, box open, > select  shutdown > click OK.

Remove the USB stick.

Not sure, if you have a 3rd party Antivirus installed make sure you disable the real time protection when the Rescue Media wizard is working because it could eventually lock some files and prevent the unmount operation...

This can be a controversial issue for some!

In my opinion Defender gives enough protections for users that have awareness about security, for those users usually referred as "click happy" I think they need more help to avoid mistakes...
