I've had AVG free for a bunch of years and it seems to be slowing my computer more every time it tries to update.  Is there any other free software that does as good a job and won't clog me up so badly?

If you're running Windows 10, use Windows Defender and MalwareBytes Free.

Like Doc I recommend you use Windows Defender, it's a perfectly serviceable AV, and is better integrated into W10 than any 3rd Party Program, and is therefore likely to cause fewer problems.

If you're going to uninstall AVG, do not use the on board uninstaller, since it tends to leave orphans. Instead use AVGClear, which usually does a better job of clearing it out.

Thank you both.  AVG is history on this computer.

Depends on what your definition of safe is.

It won't infect you, but IMO it's not a particularly well written piece of software, and I have helped a number of people who have had problems which were resolved when it was removed.
