Prior to finishing some tasks on another older thread, I wanted to clone my whole drive to a new partition on a large external hard drive. In the past, I have used EaseUs PartitionMaster (version 12.5) to work with the disc my computer, but on opening the program again, I see no commands for creating new partitions, and other aspects seem different than I remember. Wanting to read the instructions again, I clicked the program "Help" button but when a new tab opened,  the server "couldn't be found" here: https://www.easeus.c...rtition-master/

Why messing with partitions? Using Macrium Reflect Free or EaseUS Todo Backup create an Image Backup to the external drive, you don't need to change anything because the image is stored on a compressed big file that can stored on any folder you choose inside the external drive.

 

Cloning makes more sense when you wan to replace a smaller drive with a bigger one.

Partitioning a large drive lets me use them for different purposes and allows assigning specific letters to each, allows encrypting just certain ones, keeps various parts from interfering with each other, allows faster searching, etc.

 

If my current computer drive fails, cloning allows it to be fully reproduced, including all sectors, on a new drive. I have the room I'll otherwise never need, so why not? I do have backup images, but just wanted to do it differently this time.

My Easeus backup doesn't always perform as I'd like it to and my not remembering small details for ever doesn't help either.

Letting Windows see different copies of the same partition will result in problems because conflicting partition ID's, etc. that is why some cloning programs ask if you want to create a different partition layout on the source or hide them to avoid problems after the clone.

 

A proper windows backup must include all the system partitions or the "restore" may fail! By using cloning the external drive should not have any data or things could go wrong very easily...

I don't understand that argument. This is for a rarely-connected external drive, the new partition would be named with a higher and different letter than elsewhere, and the drive, let alone that partition, wouldn't be accessed normally. And, even if I decided not to make a clone or image, I still have reasons to divide the unit into a few partitions for other purposes. Sorry for being brief, but I've been short on free time lately.
