The password that I use to login to my computer daily, is rejected when I try to login in Windows 10 Safe Mode. I need to know how to access Safe Mode.

(I am the sole user of my ASUS laptop running Windows 10 Home. The computer uses an Intel i7 CPU and has 16 GB of RAM.)

How do you sign in normally? With a pin or a password? Microsoft account or local account?

Perhaps when you sign in Safe mode you are asked about a password and maybe your Microsoft account's password.

Thanks for responding.

I log in with computer's password; no PIN. It's the same password I use to log into my LogInLive.com -- which is my Microsoft (Outlook) password.

I don't believe that I have any other Microsoft passwords.

Can you sign in normal mode?

Is there any particular reason you want to boot in Safe mode?

I login to my computer every day, in normal mode. No problem.

From time to time, I would have problems with my system, so I did an analysis using a program called "WhySoSlow", it gave me a relatively clean bill of health except for the following:

BIOS and chipset behavior

The highest measured SM BIOS interrupt or other stall was 599 microseconds. This is considered very poor. Your system will have difficulty handling multimedia in real-time and will be subject to unexpected stutters and unresponsive behavior.

I was trying to figure out how to update the BIOS and also to run other diagnostics--I forget which program I was using--but it insisted that I run any diagnostics or take any corrective actions in Safe Mode. That seemed reasonable, so I said yes when the program asked me if I wanted to login to Safe Mode. It then logged me out of regular mode and brought me into Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, however, I was unable to login. My password was rejected several times. I repeated the process several times and got the same result. I don't have the time--at this moment--to check to see which program I was trying to run, but I'll try to do that in a day or so.

I still have to figure out how to update my BIOS (there is an update available). And, of course, I still have to figure out how to login to Safe Mode.

Hi.

When you try to boot in Safe mode, are you connected to the internet?

Follow the steps below to boot in Safe mode with networking:

  • Start by shutting down your computer.
  • Press on the power button on the case to turn it on.
  • After the computer is about 3 - 5 seconds into the boot-up process, hold down the power button to shut down the computer.
  • Repeat the above process once again.
  • For the third time, turn on the computer and allow it to boot up.
  • If you completed the process correctly, a message saying Preparing Automatic Repair should appear.
  • In a few seconds, another message will appear stating Diagnosing your PC and Automatic Repair will open.
  • When you reach the Automatic Repair screen, click on Advanced Options.
  • At the next screen, select Troubleshoot.
  • When you see the next screen, select Advanced Options.
  • Select Startup Settings, then Restart.
  • After the Startup Settings window appears, hit the "5" key on the keyboard (Safe mode with networking).
  • At the next login prompt screen, enter your password for your computer.
  • If the Safe Mode opens properly, the desktop should appear with "Safe Mode" in each corner of the desktop.

Let me know if you were able to access Safe mode.

In case you are still having problems:

  • Repeat the above steps (boot in Safe mode with networking) until you reach to the sign in screen. Do not type your password.
  • When you reach login screen, press Windows + U and select the On-Screen Keyboard from the Ease of Access list.
  • Use you cursor to type the password with On-Screen Keyboard.
  • Before clicking the login, press the eye symbol (I.e. Reveal Password) option in the password field, to see the password is correct.

Let me know if you were able to access Safe mode.

Followed your directions (thank you for making them super clear) exactly, but I ended up with the same result; even when using the onscreen keyboard: "The password is incorrect. Try Again"

I definitely typed my password in correctly, but my computer still would not recognize it to allow me to enter Safe Mode.

I probably haven't gone into safe mode for well over a year, but I never had trouble going into it in the past. I also have not changed my password from the time I purchased the computer. And, no one else has access to this computer.

I'm hoping you have other suggestions for me.

Hi.

Did you make sure that you are connected to the internet when in Safe mode?

Absolutely. I chose #5 (Safe Mode with Networking) just as you recommended. I, of course, never got into Safe Mode, since my password was rejected.

Can you please take a screenshot of the sign in screen with the password, and one screenshot of the screen when you take the error?
