So basically, everything you type in the address bar gets enveloped in www. .org ?

Or only a few sites like the ones you mentioned?

Can you do this to help troubleshoot.

Click Start > Run > cmd.exe > OK

The command prompt will open.

In the prompt, behind the > type tracert www.gmail.com and hit ENTER

You will get a column of hops to the site.
Let me know if it is successfull and what the IP is in which it got translated.
Should be something like 64.233.171.107

basically, cnn and gmail are the only ones that seem to be redirected. however, i have not been able to get into hotmail or yahoo mail either. everything goes slow and then times out.

I did what you said and the IP is 64.233.185.107.

Thanks again for helping me.

Are you willing to try something for me?

Save the part in bold below in notepad as removehook.reg

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}]

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

It may take a reboot for the changes to work.

Two things to see what could be responsible.

1. Do the URL's you try to reach have this syntax http://userID:password@website.com

2. If you copy & paste this in the address bar http://64.233.185.107/ what happens then?

I think so.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as prefixes.reg
Set filetype to "All files"

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Nothing we did should have any influence on the speed at all.

You still end up at http:///?%20www.gmail.com when you type in gmail.com ?

If so:
  • Download the Registry Search Tool.
  • Unzip the contents of RegSrch.zip to a convenient location.
  • Double-click on RegSrch.vbs.
  • If you have an anti-virus installed it might prompt you about a running script. Please ignore this warning and allow the script to run.
  • In the "Enter search string (case insensitive) and click OK..." box paste this string:
    • /?%20www
  • Click "OK" to search the registry for that string.
  • Wait for a few minutes while it completes the search.
  • Click "OK" to open the results in WordPad.
  • Copy and paste the entire results into your next post.

If it doesn't find anything, it won't open the results either. That's correct.

Try once more please, but now for
%20www
If that doesn't result in anything
/? www (including that space)

Back to the drawing board then. :tazz:

Download and doubleclick (with all IE windows closed):
http://www.spywarein...tools/IEFIX.reg

Then find this file:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and rename it to hosts.bak

Try again after a reboot.
