I need to email my tax preparer my tax documents, most of which I received as pdfs from my employer, bank, etc. How can I send this material so hackers can't read them? I don't know how to encrypt them.

Get the free 7-zip

https://www.7-zip.org/

Once you have it installed, just put your tax files all in the same folder then right click on the folder and Add to Archive.  You can set the password on that page.  Also unless your preparer also has 7-zip you should change the Archive format to: zip

I would give the preparer the password over the phone.  Then they just have to right click on the zip file and Extract All.  It will ask for the password.

I'm having second thoughts here in that I already tried a method with my tax preparer that seemed to work and I'm hoping not to bother him with another. I'd like to run this by you:  I did an Insert of some pdfs in a Word document, then saved the Word doc with a password. I emailed it to him and gave him the password over the phone. Do you have confidence in that method? Thanks.

As long as your version of Word is 2007 or newer it should be OK:

It's newer than 2007 so should be OK.
