Hello JacknSherr and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ad-Aware

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please open the trial version of Ewido Security Suite, and update the definitions to the latest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Open Ewido Security Suite.
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
  • Click on Start
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Reboot normally

Install Ad-Aware and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qsFj3sg] sccemgmt.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [bBwtRiMmQ] sbepmesh.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sbeb] C:\Program Files\uers\acrs.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.archiviosex.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.redfunny.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: www.skymasters.biz
O20 - Winlogon Notify: policies - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvl0293mg.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

sccemgmt.exe
sbepmesh.exe
C:\Program Files\uers\acrs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvl0293mg.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Thank you so much for your quick reply! It was so quick, I only saw it about an hour ago.

Here's the latest HijackThis log. Certainly, something is left. If anything, the pop-ups have increased. How depressing this all is!

Hello again Jack

This often happens when you move some of the stones the malware is hiding under. I haven’t as yet identified what you are suffering from, so let’s try again.

Please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0AD937E7-2F37-4873-A05E-548A67EF1D0E} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: FlashEnhancer Ext - {5EDB03AF-0341-4e96-9E9B-3171522E4BAF} - c:\Program Files\Fla\fla.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tvs_b] C:\program files\tvs\tvs_b.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FlaCPY] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flacpy.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sbeb] C:\Program Files\uers\acrs.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Syncmgr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\solgntfy.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WindowsUpdate - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtnq0755e.dll

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\program files\tvs\tvs_b.exe
c:\Program Files\Fla\fla.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flacpy.exe
C:\Program Files\uers\acrs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtnq0755e.dll[

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

A few things that are worth mentioning:

In following your instructions for checking the seven boxes in the HiJackThis routine, three of the them were no where to be found: the three that were missing were:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0AD937E7-2F37-4873-A05E-548A67EF1D0E} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: FlashEnhancer Ext - {5EDB03AF-0341-4e96-9E9B-3171522E4BAF} - c:\Program Files\Fla\fla.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WindowsUpdate - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtnq0755e.dll

Your instructions for the Killbox routine had a step that never presented itself to me: you said to click "no" at the Pending Operations prompt. I never came across a Pending Operations prompt.

Finally, after posting my last message (the second reply in this string), I had to do a reboot. When doing so, I found that for the first time since getting this computer, I was asked to identify myself as a user. In going to into the control panel to User Maintenance, I found that there were three users. Never having gone into this facility before, I didn't know how many were there before. There was one, identified as ASP, that I deleted. A second one for Guest Users was also present. This didn't seem unreasonable, so I left it.

I don't know if these factors are significant in anyway...

Thanks again for your capable assistance!

Jack

Hello again Jack

I think you did exactly the right thing with the user name. I assume that ASP stands for, Association of Shareware Professionals, and that the malware relies upon individuals not deleting something grandiose. With regard to Killbox instructions, I'll have to do a dummy run to check my instructions, there was a change made a while ago to the programme. Thanks for letting me know.

These infections identified by Active Scan, are the same ones that I dealt with for my daughter last night. I used Spybot search and destroy and therefore I am going to suggest the same.

Please download Spybot search & destroy Spybot S&D, install it, update it, immunize it, and perform a scan. When it has completed, ensure that you check everything it finds coloured Red only before clicking Fix Selected Problems. If Spybot requests starting again at reboot to clear memory resident malware, please ensure you click YES, giving it permission to do so.

Please reboot and post a fresh HJT log.

BTW, your last log was clean, this is simply precautionary.

For the first time in a week, Spybot S&D congratulated me for having no immediate threats. Champagne bottles are being opened as I type this.

I'm tickled to death that no malware is showing. I can't even begin to express my appreciation.

However, I'm still getting pop-ups left, right, and center. What's got me confused is that I have the Windows Service Pack for XP, which should be doing at least some blocking. I also have the Google Toolbar that was blocking pop ups like a champ when I was still using the computer that had Win 98. Right now, the only pop-ups that appear to be blocked are the ones I expect (like when I try to open my AOL mail...)

Is it possible that the recently defeated malware corrupted my pop up blockers?

Thanks again!

Hello again Jack

If you look at the HJT logs, in particular the 020 entry, you'll see it keeps changing. That's almost certainly the source. Try this:

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Okay... I did as you instructed and the first thing that happened when I prompted the l2mfix.bat file to run was the following message:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

When I pressed 'close' to terminate, the same message popped up again. I pressed 'close' again and received the following report:

Hello again Jack

Bullseye!

The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

I hope they are not all as tough as this one. ;)

You may need to delete your restore points if they have been infected. The only clue you get is the very first Ewido sweep and perhaps a note from your AV programme. I can't tell from the logs I have seen, and our golden rule is don't destroy unless you know you have to. It is better to restore to an infected system than none at all. If you need to, drop me a PM and I'll give you instructions.

Happy safe surfing Jack!

Phil

A million times over, thank you.

I have now installed Spyware Blaster.

I've had AdAware and SpyBot which are regularly updated, as well as the Google Toolbar.

I use Firefox about 50% of the time, but I suspect it's going to become my new default browser after this fiasco.

I've ensured automatic updates to my McAfee Firewall and VirusScan. and my Windows XP service packs and updates are totally up to date. I will keep Ewido as an on-demand scanner, but leave McAfee running in the background.

Should you feel that another protection scheme is more appropriate, please let me know. I will certainly defer to your expertise in this matter.

The link to HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE was down, so I assume there's either bandwidth issues or something else. All the same, I know exactly what websites I went to that gave me the problem:

1. My children have weblogs posted on My Space and Greatest Journal. EVERYTIME I go there to spy on their social lives, I walk away with a dozen different instances of Spyware.

2. I went to site that I previously trusted that stores On-Line Guitar Archive files. I noticed that the site took longer than usual to load, and that was when the McAfee bells started ringing.

Another note: I've noticed the distinct vulnerability of XP over 98. Until about 3 weeks ago, I was working on a dinosaur that ran 98, and, while it was slow, I never had any problems that McAfee, SpyBot and AdAware couldn't cure on the spot. With this new computer and XP, I've been seen a dramatic increase in the amount of spyware to which I've been susceptible. That aside, I'm distinctly less of a McAfee fan this week over last.

The nice thing is, I came home this afternoon after several appointments and there WASN'T 47 pop ups urging me to buy a ladder system, see The Kinsey Report, or sell everything I own on eBay.

Again, Phil, I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. This one truly had me boggled. Does this website in anyway solicit publication of their efforts? I run several websites, and I will happily place a link on each and every one of them. I never would have found you if I hadn't googled one of the websites that kept popping up on me.

Hello again Jack

And thank you for your generosity. I have asked the site administrator to read this thread and your very kind offer.

I do so agree with you, the world was a better place before XP, however, having said that, provided you know the threat and plan for it, you can be trouble-free.

It is unfair of me to recommend any single product since there are many good ones around and much of it is down to personal preference. Here's mine:

I personally run AVG (Alvaro Villa Galvis) as my antivirus with a daily update and scan, alongside Microsoft Antispyware Beta, which is not 100% effective by any means. I then do on-demand scans with Spybot and Ad-Aware and I clean-up using CCleaner everyday. I also use Firefox (with the "on steroids" settings) for all my surfing except MSN Messenger which is embedded to MSIE, and it all seems to work OK.

Glad to have helped. I will leave this thread open for a few days.

We welcome links to our site. You can find a number of banners here, or you can use a simple text link to our homepage http://www.geekstogo.com.

Actually, XP is far more secure than Win98, and some infections that Win98 gets can be very difficult to remove. The fact that XinXP is the most popular is the reason that so many infections are targeted at it. Mac OSX and Linux have zero spyware problems, but they also have a combined less than 5% market share in the desktop space. Happy and safe surfing! :tazz:

P.S. Nice work Phil! ;)
