first time caller--

computer went a little goofy--after setup, error box appears stating "microsoft visual c++ runtime error" that appears in \winnt\Explorer.exe. The application has requested runtime close in an unusual way.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Here's the hijack log:

Welcome to GTG.

Try to get your Windows 2000 updates up to SP4 for max. protection.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. If you have trouble updating, you may do it manually at http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ Do NOT run the Ewido scan yet.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. OK, before we go on, I want you to take note of this first. This program will wipe out all files in your Temporary folders, any file extensions that have a tilde (~) in it, .bak files, .chk files, .tmp files and index.dat files. Most of you should be ok with this, but there may be some who need these files. If you are one of them, do not follow this step. Post back a reply telling us about this. So if that's ok, then download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

NaviSearch
BullsEye Network

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O1 - Hosts: 170.142.236.100 ei01u12 <<-- if you put this line into the hosts file, then you may leave this unchecked
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LocalShell] C:\WinNT\Shell\LocalShell.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinUpdate] C:\system.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [win] c:\command.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [USB controller] "C:\DOCUME~1\ei47324\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD2.tmp\svcmm32.exe" /startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [seeve] C:\WINNT\seeve.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [motoin] C:\WINNT\mm15201518.Stub.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Nsv] C:\WINNT\system32\nsvsvc\nsvsvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [picsvr] C:\WINNT\system32\picsvr\picsvr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\vraplr.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BullsEye Network] C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\bin\bargains.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NaviSearch] C:\Program Files\NaviSearch\bin\nls.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUNPS2] RUNDLL32 AUNPS2.DLL,_Run@16

Next run a full scan in Ewido. Save the log from the Ewido scan so that you can post it later.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\nsvsvc\
C:\WINNT\system32\picsvr\
C:\WINNT\system32\vraplr.exe
C:\WinNT\Shell\LocalShell.exe
C:\system.exe
c:\command.exe
C:\WINNT\seeve.exe
C:\WINNT\mm15201518.Stub.exe
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\
C:\Program Files\NaviSearch\
AUNPS2.DLL

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. Once it's done, you may click the Close button. When asked if you want to logoff, choose No.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here along with the Ewido log.

I still have the "visual C++ runtime error" showing.

When I run the HJT, I get 2 messages.
1. system denied access to the Hosts file
notepad "C:\WINNT\System 32\drivers\etc\hosts"

2. unexpected error @ modMain_CheckOther\Item C
error #75-path/file access error.

I could not run Ewido due to lack of administrator privliges.

Here is my lates HJT:

Do you have admin rights on this computer? Can you install Ewido? We need you to run Ewido (best in Safe Mode, but if you can't even Normal Mode is better than not running it at all). Get admin rights (IT dept.) if you can to install Ewido if you can't install it.

So run Ewido. Fixing the below in HijackThis without running Ewido will be pointless because the random files will keep regenerating. Run Ewido either in Safe Mode (best if you can) or Normal Mode. Then do the following:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [motoin] C:\WINNT\mm15201518.Stub.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\system32\vraplr.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LocalShell] C:\WinNT\Shell\LocalShell.exe

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\vraplr.exe
C:\WINNT\mm15201518.Stub.exe
C:\WinNT\Shell\LocalShell.exe

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Post the Ewido log here also.
