Hi, new user here.

Im buidling a new machine for college, with the help of a few experienced buddies.

Ive been working out the specs for a while, but id appreciate any suggestions. And the real concern of mine is comaptibility of all the parts, and knowing every extra little thing that wont be included (wires, screws, etc etc.) This is my first machine, so im a bit nervous, but If I know I have all the parts I need I will be more confident about it.

Heres the current setup

Notice, most of the parts are "retail" so that they would include what i need, but some are oem, which is why im worried about not having a small piece.

Hi,

The link you provided does not work because its your private wish list at newegg so provide links to each of the individual parts and I am sure someone will help

You obviously have plenty of cash to spend, while the MSI is a really good board and im getting one myself check out the ABIT Fatality SLI it is a good board with a decent sound card includuded and the uguru panel drive as well.
You might want a bigger/better PSU for your mahine as well if you want sli the 450W is big enough but you ideally want 500W at least.

A warning SLi is a difficult thing to implement later on so dont think you can just install a new card you will have to buy another identical one and flash them both to have identical bios. Just if you are thinking about you might just be getting an sli board because they come with better extras.

I doubt you are going to overclock so you could always get a pair 0f corsair xms 1024mb sticks instead for ram as corsair tends to be cheaper than ocz and the memory quality is similar. If you add another gig of ram later you will only get ddr333 out of it if you use all the slots on the mobo.

I actually looked into psu's a lot. This one has a split +12v rail, with 15amps and 17 amps, which i think should be plenty for what Im doing. Also, i plan on getting another identical 6800gt later on, so thanks for the bios flash tip.

Why does the ram slow down to 333mhz? Im a bit confused about that one.

And I did some good research on ram, and these ocz sticks match or beat the benchmarks of some corsair xms ram (2-2-2-5) that I had earlier, and beat the corsair in price as well ($174 compared to $220)

unusual but its a different country so you get some stuff cheap over there corsair is by far the cheapest here so thats why i recomended it. A pair of 6800GTs use alot of power 120W or more if i remeber right so if you have alot of peripheral or are overclocking as with that ram you seem to want to you might run out in future. But you could always get another they arent the most expensive things to buy i suppose.

Dont know why it slows down i just know it does its written in big letters on the motherboard manuals i downloaded.

I did read on the mobo instructions online that if its double sided ram it can slow down, but how do I tell if it is? I didnt read anything about that yet.

Also, as far as power, this is my source.

http://shsc.info/PowerSupplyGuide

According to those amp values, my setup would need about 15 amps, not including an extra 3 for another 6800gt later on.

My current psu on the list has 32A, so id have almost double what that requires.

It seems that wattage really doesnt matter unless its on the right voltage rails, and thats why the psu im getting seems highly recommended, even though it is only 450W. Antec is supposedly a great psu brand also.

But one more question, I used to have a venice 3500+ on the list, and I upgraded to a san deigo 3700+ for $60. Do you think thats a wise investment for $60?? Aparently the SD core is amazing for OC'ing if I chose to do so later on.

Yes definately get the SD i only wish i could afford one for my new rig. Although the amount of amps is important its only important as far as you have the minimum and its stable at that. You want enough power which is measured in watts, i was on a good site with a wattage calculator but i cant find it now. For your system you will need a fair bit of power SLi will need alot 450W should be fine but when you are spending that much money get a 500W. The antec 480W should do you fine im thinking about getting the new pro series antec case that comes with it included. (what a steal)
