my guess is that the beta installed a file that is not being removed--different version dll then what is required.

Windows file protection is preventing you from altering it.

You could try
sfc /scannow
but I am loathe to do this on a PC unless you have a windows xp cd with sp2 integrated because you will run into the "please insert the sp cd" loop of eternal damnation.

do you have one, or can you slipstream a cd?

the other idea is a windows repair, but this means reinstalling all the service packs and hotfixes

i don't have a windows cd with sp2 integrated, and i am not familiar with that 'scannow' command, so i probably shouldn't do that. similarly, i'm not sure i should deal with a windows repair... i'd like to fix this issue... but this is becoming an equally annoying problem to fix as it is of it not working. i really appreciate your help. perhaps if in the future you have an idea and come across a fix... please send me an email!

many thanks! this is a great site.

man you are a glutton for punishment.....

yet another thought, try installing the remote desktop client again--perhaps it will overwrite whatever msn beta screwed up
