My computer was infected with a virus: bloodhound.wp32.ep

1- My desktop wallpaper disappeared. Instead it's a blue background with a message that says

"Security Warning
A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:c0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

* System can not function in normal mode.
Please check you security settings

* Scan your PC with any avaliable antivirus/spyware remover to fix the problem"

NOTE: I noticed this message contains some typos so I think it's generated by the virus

2- There is an error window that constantly pops up (has a red circle with a white X in it):

the top blue bar of the window says "combop.exe - Bad Image" and inside the actual window is written "The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\ is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I have run Norton Anti Virus and it discovered the file WININET.DLL was infected, but was unable to either repair or delete it. I have run AVG 7.0 with no results.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to bump up but there have been developments. My start toolbar and the start menu are no longer available and I am unable to run any of the programs like CWshredder and others. I am afraid this virus is slowly eating my computer. Please help ASAP.

Hi Souss,

We are sorry to have missed your log due to heavy traffic.

I will help you clean your PC :tazz:

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall sosme programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

2. Remove Infections

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

4. Delete Rogue files

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

MyWay

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

C:\Program Files\MyWay <----- Full Folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\phqghum.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\combo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\combop.exe
Logitech.exe
ntguard32.exe
winhost.exe
Locate these files without full path using the Windows Search Function

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

Yes I still have the blue background that says the following:

"Security Warning
A fatal error in IE has occured at 0028:c0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

* System can not function in normal mode.
Please check you security settings

* Scan your PC with any avaliable antivirus/spyware remover to fix the problem"

The error message with "bloodhound.w32.ep" is not popping up anymore though. Maybe this virus was cleaned out and I have other things now?

Lets try this. If you have any problems at any stage, make a note of it and let me know about it after completing the entire fix.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folder -

C:\Program Files\MyWay <----- Full Folder

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save Report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

I downloaded the file, but when came the time to extract it I got the following message:

Error(0): This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. (“C:\PROGRA~1\WINZIP\winzip32.exe” -%-* /noui /extractm /@ “C:\Documents and Settings\Souss\Desktop\smitRem” “C:\DOCUME~1\Souss\LOCALS~1\Temp\wzs3.tmp”)

Should I go ahead and run hijack this in safe mode anyway?
