ran everything and will post logs but I have a few questions.

1. Can I delete the icons on my desktop for spy sheriff and a couple of ads?

2. Automatic updates have been turned off and I can't turn it back on. What should I do?

1. Your log is looking good.

2. Yes you can delete all the SpySherriff icons on your desktop

3. Do you recognize the R0 items?: http://portal.fitsvc...sp?UserID=18494

4. What auto updates are not working? Windows? or all auto update features? and what have you tried to remedy the situation?

Regards,

Trevuren

3. yeah that one is okay

4. windows update. I went through security center and tried to turn them on. A warning popped up saying the settings could not be changed. So I went into system, but all the options are faded. I cannot select any of those options.

What do I do with all of the files that Panda scan could not disinfect? Also, should I still have Isearch? It comes up as the search engine whenever I use Firefox.

Thanks

PLease Note: Do not respond before tomorrow afternoon for I am experiencing major email problems and I will lose your response. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Trevuren

To answer your questions:

1. Don't worry those files are either quaranteened or inyour system restore cache. Do not use system restore until after we have finished our cleanup or all the bugs will return.

2. The FireFox Searpage should be able to be changed manually.

3. The update question: I don't have an answer. I will pose the question in forum and get back to you on that in a couple of days probably

Regards,

Trevuren

Howdy:

Looking at your update problem.. Microsoft Windows Update can only be accessed through Internet Explorer.. I noticed you were using Firefox.. Windows won't allow it to update!!

Another question to answer:

Are your firewall options greyed out also?

To find out: Click Start>Run and type firewall.cpl, then OK

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Another thing I need you to do is the following:

Download getservices.bat from: http://www.bleepingc.../getservice.zip

Run the program and post the log.
-----------------------------------------------------------
And lastly for tonight (I think):

Download newbat.zip

Extract the file, run the program and please post the log. (In case the link doesn't work, I have provided you with the file as an attachment to this post.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
These responses were a lot faster than I expected and we will get to the undeleted files once this problem is resolved.

The following was edited as far as content and addition of the attachment by Trevuren.

We received way more responses that are possibilities to try so don't get discouraged. You are in good hands with this crew.

Regards,

Trevuren

None Yet. It would probably be quicker for you to take this problem to one of our other forums that deal mostly with tech matters.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Trevuren

the automatic update options are all still greyed out. I can't change them through the security center or the system icon in control panel.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg and as "All Files" as the type of file.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
"FirstRun"=dword:00000000
"FirewallDisableNotify"=-
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=-
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
"FirewallDisableNotify"=-
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=-
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]
"CreateFirstRunRp"=dword:00000000
"DisableSR"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]
"DisableSR"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoUpdate"=-
"AUOptions"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoUpdate"=-
"AUOptions"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\DomainProfile]
"EnableFirewall"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\DomainProfile]
"EnableFirewall"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\StandardProfile]
"EnableFirewall"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\StandardProfile]
"EnableFirewall"=-

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer.
