Can anybody help? Please help me! ;)

Dear GTG expert, please help :help: ;) :tazz:

That SpySheriff appeared on my computer couple of days ago. Tried almost everything to remove it but with no luck. --- it keeps on coming back! I wrote to its website but got an answer said it wasn't installed by them but they would offer a free trial ... --- in short, the most shameless guys in the industry.

I have done (hope so) the preparation you posted: downloaded and ran WinSockFix, CleanUp, Ad-aware SE, CWShredder and Spybot S&D and now need your further help to remove that devil SpySheriff from my computer. As tho the anti-virus software, my computer has McAFee ASAP on it. So I didn't installed other anti-virus software yet. If I do need to, please let me know.

The computer has since been rebooted.

Will very much appreciate your help.

Thomas

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't scan with it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Please run HijackThis, do a scan, and place a check next to the following items to be fixed:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wpds.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\doriot.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Archive] C:\Program Files\Archive\archive.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wpds.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\doriot.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wersds.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\doriot.exe

Close all browsers and windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Delete the files in bold:
C:\WINNT\system32\doriot.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\gdqfw.exe
C:\WINNT\myaohjm.exe
C:\Program Files\Archive\archive.exe

Delete the folder in bold:
C:\Program Files\Archive\
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine

Looks like that worked good...

SpySheriff should be gone now...that log must have been taken in safe mode because the process list is so short?

Also, you are running Microsoft AntiSpyware. I recommend you uninstall it as it is in beta and has some problems. If you do not uninstall it you need to disable it's real-time protection so it doesn't prevent the fixes from working:
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please run HijackThis, do a scan, and place a check next to the following items to be fixed:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0/4} x5_C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINNT\myaohjm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0]w*0@C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\WINNT\myaohjm.exe

Close all browsers and windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer and post a new HijackThis log in a reply to this topic from normal mode.

Hi Canoeingkidd,

The report was generated when the computer was rebooted to normal with network connection on. I saw only one item detected by Panda. When it finished, I clicked the "See the Report" and it just gave me one like "Adware ..." I was suprised by such a short report, too.

I have done the rest of work you instructed in your last message.

Here comes the HJT report just generated:

Is this file actually on your hard drive?:
C:\winstall.exe

Or this folder:
C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\

Also...can you tell me what these files are for? Something I found suggest they are related to http://www.cypressnet.com/ (which is fine - I am just wondering what they are):
C:\Program Files\CEI\APV90\WiseUpdt.exe
C:\CEI\AWS52\WiseUpdt.exe
C:\CEI\AFP32\WiseUpdt.exe
C:\CEI\WMS52\WiseUpdt.exe
C:\CEI\WPWW52\WiseUpdt.exe
C:\CEI\APVW82\WiseUpdt.exe
You can visit them in Windows Explorer and right-click > "Properties" to help figure out what they are if you don't recognize them.

Hi Canoeingkidd,

I have deleted the c:\Program Files\SpySheriff\ folder in the later scanning and it is no longer in the second HTJ report in my last message. But I don't remember if I deleted the c:\winstall.exe or not. Will check it when I return to my office.

Those files under directories c:\Program Files\CEI\ and c:CEI\ have been identified for Computer Engineering Inc.'s software I am using.

I have turned off my workstation until I am back to my office on Tuesday. Everything should be freezed up until we can rework on it.

Thank you so much for your help and time.

You have very a nice weekend.

Thomas

Hi Canoeingkidd,

What do you think on the current HJT report? It has been cleaned? Do I have to remove some of the tools from my computer if it is cleaned, or not necessary?

I heartily appreciate your help and time like always.

Thomas

One of the lines indicating SpySheriff came back...but if neither C:\winstall.exe or C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\ and you're not having problems I'm willing to bet anything Microsoft Antispyware's real-time protection just restored it.

You aren't using MSconfig or the HijackThis ignorelist are you? I noticed alot of things dissapeared in you HijackThis log in post #5 only to reappear later and then some dissapeared again? :tazz:

Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please run HijackThis, do a scan, and place a check next to the following items to be fixed:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

Close all browsers and windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Clean out temporary files:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
If your version of Ad-aware is not Ad-aware SE 1.06 can you please download the latest verion of Ad-aware SE Personal and install it.
  • Before scanning with Ad-aware SE Personal:
  • Update
  • Select Check for updates.
  • Then Connect and download the latest reference file.
[*]Run a FULL Ad-aware scan using the following configuration below
  • Click Scan now.
  • Select Perform full system scan and hit Next to let Ad-Aware scan your drives.
  • Allow it to scan.
  • Once it is finished, click Next.
  • Under the Critical Objects tab, rightclick in the list, choose Select All.
  • Close all browsers and windows except Ad-aware and click Next.
  • It will ask for verification of checked items. Choose OK.
  • Once it has removed the entries close Ad-Aware.
[/list]Reboot your computer and then post a new HijackThis log in a reply to this topic.

OK, Canoeingkidd,

This time the MS Antispyware was absolutely disabled before the HJT and Ad-aware SE Personal been executed.

I used msconfig weeks ago but HJt ignorelist? I don't remember.

Well, did what you said and rerun the HJT.

Your latest log looks good. :tazz:

Now I'd like you to check to make sure your copy of wininet.dll is not infected.

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org/.
At the top, click "Browse". Open the following file:
C:\WINNT\System32\wininet.dll
Click "Submit" and when the scan is finished copy/paste the results to a reply to this thread.

Looks great! :tazz:

Now you just need to apply some protection so you don't get re-infected. Also, in reply to your question about whether you should keep these programs - you probably won't need to keep specialized tools like CWShredder or SmitRem but it would be good to keep the general malware removal programs like Ad-aware and Spybot-S&D and run occasional scans.

You need to prevent re-infection. I strongly recommend you take the following steps because infections are likely to reoccur unless you are protected (I post the same speech for everyone so you may have already taken some of these steps):
  • Disable then re-enable System Restore. This will delete your old restore points. Malware could get backed up in System Restore. To do so in Windows XP see this tutorial. To do so in Windows ME see this tutorial. (If you are using a different Operating System skip this step).

  • Keep up-to-date with the latest security patches from Microsoft. This step is VERY important. Please visit http://www.windowsupdate.com in Internet Explorer and if it asks to install software, let it. Start the scan for updates needed for your computer. Install all critical updates. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed.
You can also access the Windows Update site at any time by going to "Tools" > "Windows Update" in Internet Explorer. Please check for updates frequently.

  • Install Antivirus software. It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Two popular programs are AVG and Avast. Both have free versions for home users. Do not have more than one active antivirus at a time.

  • Install a Firewall. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Please see Understanding and Using Firewalls. Do not use more than one firewall. If you are using Windows XP SP2 the rather poor Windows Firewall is enabled by default and you will need to disable it before installing another one.

  • Install Ad-aware and Spybot-S&D and scan with them regularly. They will each catch items the other may miss and can clean some of the leftovers off since you have just been cleansed of an infection. Spybot-S&D also has some good prevention features. See these links:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Stay away from Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products. "Rogue/Suspect" means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. See a list of known Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products compiled by Eric Howes at http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm.

  • Install SpywareBlaster. SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. See the link below:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Install IE-SPYADS. This script will place an enormous number of web sites known to be abusive into Internet Explorer's "Restricted Zone". Any site in that list will be unable to run javascripts, java applets, set or read cookies or use ActiveX scripting. You still will be able to visit those sites but they will be very limited in what they can do.
Download it from HERE. Read the "ReadMe.txt" included with the download for help installing it. You will need to download new versions occasionally and uninstall the old version.

  • Keep these programs updated. If you do not they will not help you very much.

  • Read the doxdesk prevention article at http://www.doxdesk.c...prevention.html for some more tips to prevent infection.
