My computer was hijacked by this pest spyware. ;)
I have been following a post you guys have sent to ricardo on june 9 2005 @ 09:21 pm. I have managed to remove the hookdump.exe, winnook.exe, and possibly the desktop html. However, my desktop is now asking for me to restore it (Active desktop recovery), and my homepage is still hijacked. I have downloaded the newest version of Hijack this and saved it to my C: drive but I am stuck from here.

Can you guys help me out??? :tazz:

Thanks

Hi there, Thank you for replying!
Due to my homepage being hijacked I can no longer access me email from home.
I actually got rid of the "antigold virus" spyware with some advice from bleepingcomputer.com, but now I realize that it is essentially a few spyware pests that have piggybacked into my computer. Along with the antivirus gold, is the about:blank spyware which I cannot seem to get rid of. I have tried getting rid of it in safe mode with hijack this, but it keeps rebooting into my homepage.
Is there anything I can do for this?? I have already tried various spyware including microsoft beta, spyhunter, spyware doctor, and ad aware, but none seem to find the hidden files that are causing the problem. They don't even seem to recognize the about:blank spyware.
Help would be greatly appreciated!! :tazz:

I will send you a copy of my hijack this logs at home today
Thanks again

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.oneclicks...es.com/bar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = http://www.oneclicksearches.com/
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe
O2 - BHO: VMHomepage Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp9854.tmp
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SNInstall] C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\NS6281400.so
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

Optional:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause<----
A file-sharing program which being ad-based includes "Cy-door" adware. Also a know source of infections, comes bundled with malware, highly suggest removing. Likely the casue of your infection, or at least contriubuted to it

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

BearShare <------Optional see above

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Program Files\winupdates
C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles
C:\Program Files\BearShare<------Optional see above

10. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msole32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmonp.exe
C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmon.exe
C:\winstall.exe

11. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

12. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

13. Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save Report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

14. Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

15. Run the program CleanUp!

16. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

17. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Just a few random bad files to clean up.
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ole32vbs.exe
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.

Thank you very much for all your help Excal!
You do a great thing for people who are victims of spyware.
What do you recommend for the maximum protection against spyware/viruses?
Should I be using a combination?

I am grateful for all that you have done.
I am now spyware free!

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate

Kerio

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
