Hi,

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme3.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ {++}]
"gdecjmk" =-

Locate fixme3.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Open up hijack this and place a check next to the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gdecjmk] c:\windows\system32\gdecjmk.exe -start

Click "checked fix"

reboot and post a fresh hijack this log.

Are you on the admin account on that computer?
Did u try the steps to fix the update problem?

:tazz:

I am not logged in as Administrator specifically, but the account I am on has admin privileges, I believe.

I did not do the Windows Update advice steps yet, because I figured it was wisest to fix all the spyware first, and also because perhaps spyware had caused the problem, and fixing that would solve things.

Here's the new HijackThis log.

K, it looks like your clean. Try signing on the admin account to start the windows Firewall and see if that works. I would advise you not to run that anywyas. There are much better options listed below and they are free.

Also try the steps for update. I will keep this thread open until you post back with the results.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

The computer is not mine, it belongs to someone who is not very computer literate. So I want to try to keep things as simple as possible.

I know about Firefox, that is what I use and I'm happy with it. I've installed it on his computer and I'll try to get him to use it instead of MSIE. Dunno if that will work. I did install the Google toolbar in IE to at least try to help with the popups.

His virus program was expired, which didn't help the situation, so I installed Antivir. It's what I use and it works well, also it reminds you to update it which he should be able to handle. I hope.

I know Windows Firewall is not the greatest, but it works OK and automatically updates itself, so that's why I wanted to set it up for him. I don't think he can handle the fancier offerings.

I figured I'd leave Spybot S&D on the system with TeaTimer, to try to help prevent infections, and of course AntiVir Guard.

For sure he needs to be able to get the Windows updates, and that's the next thing I will work on fixing; I'll let you know if I can't get them working again.

I went through Microsoft's suggestions to fix Windows Update, and that worked. I got all the patches, so that's OK. I'm still playing with the Firewall problem.

I use Sygate firewall. Very user friendly Once you get it set up, all he is concerned about is the pop up window that asks if he wants to allow something. I will check on my end also on a solution to the windows firewall problem.

Thanks,

I just did another google, and it must have reindexed, because all of a sudden I found the answer, in another thread on this very same forum! I had to delete two registry keys, then I was OK. So I think I'm all set! Thanks so much for your help. I'm pretty good with dealing with PCs, but it does seem like the spyware is getting to be more of a problem than any standard tools can keep up with. Very frustrating. My own network runs on Linux and has firewalls and such, so I don't have nearly the problem.

Sure, it's here:

http://www.geekstogo...yed-t38637.html

The solution was to delete two registry keys, and reboot. Once I did that, I still got the warning that some things were controlled by the group policy, but in fact it let me change anything I liked.

Previously I'd tried reinstalling SP2, but that did NOT fix things.
