So i was wondering how you install linux on a bootable external hard drive .
Manriva Linux have done it (http://store.mandriv...4408c03fe8f116a) and i was wondering
1. How to do it ?
2. Could i do it with other linux OSs i.e Lindows or Suse ??

I have an honours degree in computer services managment starting in September , i may do a thesis on using Linux installed on an external hard drive with all your personal settings to be used in colleges (you plug into supplied computer and boot up ur own operating system ) as oppesed to the usual model of having to use differnet computers with the supplied operating system that do not either have ur settings or ur information. (and they are usually bug ridden yes i hate the computers in college :0)

Well, I assume it would be just as easy as installing on a normal Hard Drive. Simply (assuming you are using Mandriva) choose the drive to install on when you are setting up the OS. You could certainly do it with other Linux distributions. When you are partitioning the drive leave space for other distributions.

hhhmm that sounds simple almost too simple ,, would that just make the HD bootable for that machine ?? What if i was to then move it to another computer with a different specification (ie a laptop ) ???
Either way i will give it a go ,, i have my freecom external hard drive , now i will choose which Linux to install .....i was gona go for Suse , mandrive or the lindows (linspire) ???

Some times it is that simple. It would be able to boot off of any machine as long as the bios supports booting from USB drives.

well its best i try it and see ,,,,this would be very interesting as it could change the whole way that u run colleges ie ,,new student given HD with all notes operating system and open souce software they require (possibly own IP address for security tracking etc) and off they go , the computers in the labs wouldn't even need HDs ,,,,if i write a thesis on this model it is going to be interesting to compare the advantages/dis to the normal model .
