Like I posted, I was getting messages from the Microsoft service update that my email was letting something in. I just ignored the messages and deleted it. Until I couldn't get into my Hotmail account, then I activated my mcafee virus thingie and found 4 infections, 3 were some sort of expoits (JS/Exploit-Help XSite) and 1 a virus (W32/Alcan.worm!p2p). I pushed the button to delete them and thought all was fine. I was still not able to get to hotmai or other important websites ( I am a jewelry designer and buy a lot of things off the internet and now am not able to visit the sites I buy from) and getting strange messages like some dll. not found or an I/O error. I went to Symnatic and downloaded the instructions. I looked for the files and stuff they said the worm created but couldn't find any. I went into the regestry to find the files the worm left but couldn't find any. And no, I didn't delete or modify the registry in any way. I enacted the stinger program from mcafee and it didn't find anything. Finally I came here and did what was on the first page. Here is my results.

Winsock-done
Cleanup-done (removed 1Gig of files!!)
Adware- done (saved log if needed)
Shredder-done
Spybot- PROBLEM
When downloading the program I ran into some errror messages. Here they are.
When I was looking for updates I got a message that the updater was corrupt and needed to install the update something (sorry). I got the same message for Blindman. When I was installing the updates on everyone of them I got a message that it couldn't install because the unzdll.dll was old or corrupted. I went to spybots online forum to ask for help but haven't recieved any replies as of this message.
Trend housecall-done (Had to install ActiveX- hope it wasn't a problem)
Window update- didn't do because I already have the service pack 2
Reboot- done. Programs on the computer run fine but cannot access many places on the internet. I have IE5

So, any help is very much appreciated. Like I said, it is very important to me to get to my online stuff. The websites that I cannot get to are the ones I need. I increased my security on my security manager and was wondering if I can't get to these sites because they are notorious for putting cookies or ads on the computer? Maybe?

Thanks for your help

We need to make a few changes to your system but I don't think that these are what are causing your problems. I think you are probably correct about your security settings.

Let's do some work on your HJT log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapp...://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O16 - DPF: {C1C3CC42-F029-49A2-91C2-C043DFAE3C96} (Samson Class) - http://htmldialer.pa...8/us/Dalila.cab

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Hi Jamica,

Essentially your log is clear. I would however like to scan your whole system just to make sure that nothing is lurking before I give you the All Clear.

I need you to download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
I need you to run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe. This scan only produces a report, it doesn't clean your system. I will analyze the report and recommend a course of action depending on the results.

Put a check next to the below items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • Registry
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items", please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.

:tazz: I absolutely cannot copy and paste the log for only the viruses!!!! There is no way to do it. I can highlight the 35 "viruses" the the virus log information, but there is no right click ability to copy. And of course the log is soooo big I cannot go through it all to individually find the viruses and copy and paste them. The finished log doesn't have them all together!!! So, I sure hope you can figure out a way for me to do this one.

Try this:

1. Highlight them with your mouse by leftclicking and then dragging.

2. Then when all are highlighted, do Ctrl+C which is copy and then CTRL+V which is paste.

3. Everything should be at the bottom of the report.

4. Don't get discouraged, a lot of this stuff has been deleted or doesn't have to be.

5. It will work out fine, you'll see.

You see, most of that stuff is just orphaned registry entries.

1. I must advise you that your copy of WildTangent has been identified as adware. You decide if you want to keep it.

2. I want you to run Ad-Aware again. Up date the definitions first. Then eboot your system.

3. Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

4. Run HJT , scan and post a log for final review

PS--Oh, I tried to delete the wild tangent and the message said that I couldn't get all of it out. How can I get the rest of it out, and where is it?

1. Reboot into Safe Mode.

2, Through Add/Remove programs, UNINSTALL the following programs:

WildTangent
Viewpoint

3. Using Windows Explorer, DELETE the following folders with all their content:

c:\Program Files\WilTangent
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

4. REBOOT into Normal Mode

5. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I had some problems. First, before when I was trying to removethe wildtangent files in the add/remove part of the control pannel, I got a message saying that it couldn't remove all of them. Then I got a message asking if I wanted wildtangent removed from the list. Mistakenly I pushed yes. So, when I was in Safe Mode, it wasn't in there, but I did click to remove the viewpoint programs. After removing the viewpoint folders, I had previously removed the wildtangent folder, I went back to add/remove programs just to check and there were the viewpoint programs. I clicked to remove them and then got a message saying that I couldn't do that in safe mode. Then on one mistakenly clicking the message to remove it from the list. :tazz: I am sorry, not very smart of me.

No problem, we will do it this way.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\GameDrvr.exe" /startup "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0500.dll"

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\WildTangent

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Regards,

Trevuren

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

HOW TO USE WINDOWS EXPLORER

General:

. Right Click on the START button
. Left Click on "explore"
. Find "Local Disc C" near the top and scroll down the list of folders under Local Disc C until you find the first folder that you are looking for.
------------------------------
Program Files

. Scroll down the list of folders under "c" until you reach Program Files
. Left click on Program Files and a slew of folders appear to the right.
. Search for the folder(s) you are looking for.
. When found, right click on the Folder you found and choose DELETE
. If it says that it can't delete because of contents, right click on the folder and delete its content one file/folder at a time until it is empty.
. When empty, DELETE the empty folder itself.

I hope this helps a bit,
