Hi All,

Well my CC number got picked off after I made an order last week, so I know I have some kind of malware loaded. I've completed all of the steps in the Get Started section (run all of the programs, checked for viruses on trendmicro, and am running the antivirus and antitrojan programs.) I would be very grateful if someone could look at my Hijack This log below and let me know if I need to do anything else. (I ran HJT after restarting.)

How To Start To Safe Mode In Windows 2000

*Turn the computer on
*When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key.
*The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu will appear.
*Choose the Safe mode option. (it is usually the first item in the list).
*Use the arrow keys to select it if it is not selected by default.
*Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode.
*when finished troubleshooting, close all programs
*restart the computer as you normally would

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\WINNT\system32\?ttrib.exe
c:\documents and settings\sarah leedy\local settings\temp\XXJa.exe

Here is my HFT log after making all of the changes you requested. While making them, I remembered another instance that drives me nuts and I wonder if it is virus/trojan-related: After I select Restart or Shutdown, my PC literally takes 10 minutes or more to completely do that process. It almost seems to hang. If I unplug the network connection, that often helps it to finish. What do you think?

Hi twinkle,

You must remember that all the programs that you have running must firstshut down, in their own time, one after the other foe windows to operate properly. This means it could take a while. The same applies at bootup. Antivirus applications/suites are the most time consuming. My system also takes an eternity but is better now that I no longer Norton SystemWorks.

Back to your log.

You still have an infection in there and it could be the Peper trojan.

1. Download Newuninst.exe.

2. Run it with an active internet connection.

3. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

4. Run the tool a second time (with an active internet connection).

5. Reboot to finish removing the entries it found.

6. Post a HJT log

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How To Start To Safe Mode In Windows 2000

*Turn the computer on
*When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key.
*The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu will appear.
*Choose the Safe mode option. (it is usually the first item in the list).
*Use the arrow keys to select it if it is not selected by default.
*Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode.
*when finished troubleshooting, close all programs
*restart the computer as you normally would


Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

c:\documents and settings\sarah leedy\local settings\temp<---Folder and all its content
C:\WINNT\system32\bootvid2.exe
C:\WINNT\mmc.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Sarah Leedy\Application Data\taat.exe

Please take note of all the files that you were not able to find and delete and send the list with your fresh HJT log.

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it into this thread so we can check how everything looks.

Unfortunately I didn't follow your instructions exactly...I didn't catch Safe Mode with the F8 button the first time I restarted after deleting the HJT items. When I tried deleting the items in the Safe Mode list, it said ctfmon.exe was in use so I couldn't delete it, and I see that it is still in my new HJT log. I thought about deleting it in HJT a second time and then restarting in Safe Mode, but rather than deviate even more from your instructions, I decided I better just repost my new log and let you tell me how best to fix it. Sorry!!

This is the list of all items I did not find from the Safe Mode list:

How To Start To Safe Mode In Windows 2000

*Turn the computer on
*When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key.
*The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu will appear.
*Choose the Safe mode option. (it is usually the first item in the list).
*Use the arrow keys to select it if it is not selected by default.
*Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode.
*when finished troubleshooting, close all programs
*restart the computer as you normally would


Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and DELETE it (if it is still present):

ctfmon.exe<--Not the one in the System32 Folder

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

OK, I followed the instructions correctly this time, and here is my log. There was no other ctfmon.exe (just the one in the Winnt folder), so I didn't delete it.

Also, just curious, but I see a process running named "iTunesHelper.ex", not ".exe". That seemed fishy to me, I've never heard of a ".ex" file type. Do you have any insight on that? If not it's no big deal, it just caught my eye.

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.


2. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
