I want to remove Windows XP from my computer & reinstall Windows ME. It's the system that came with my PC. The problem is that my XP in not a legit copy & I have been hit with the smitfraud virus. I cannot download the security packs from Microsoft. I have tried several things to remove the virus. Should I reformat & reinstall the original OS? Then purchase the XP upgrade? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[B]Was that an upgrade or a clean installation of the windows XP.If you have reformated the drive and installed the windows Xp then u have to format the drive again BUT if u have upgraded to Xp from ME then you can
1. try to uninstall the XP from the ADD REMOVE programmes.

I think we upgaded to XP. I don't remember, it was a while ago. XP doesn't show up on the list in Add or Remove programs. The Microsoft web site says to manually install the previous OS

I suggest that you download an ME boot diskette from www.bootdisks.com, or www.allbootdisks.com, just follw the instructions on the page to make a floppy, then use fdisk to remove all partitions, make a new extended active partition in C: and then format it. Put the floopy in when you boot up, choose "with cd-rom support", put the CD in after you've formatted it, type in E: (or whatever the CD drive is), hit enter, type setup, hit enter and Setup.exe will start. You will need to reboot after you've made the new partition before you format it.

No offence man, but teach you a lesson for having illegal software\Operating Systems on your computer, you have no one to blame but your self there. That is how I stoped with that stuff.

Sorry if I sounded really mean aye, i just have a habbit of saying what it on my mind.

But really you could try getting one of the XO CD's that is your own copy, that way you might not get that froud virus.

I did have that problem when I was really into illegal software and OS's but since i kept having that problem, I have stoped.
