Hello!

I performed all the required steps. Most of the mess got cleared up but there seem to be at least one or two files still infected and I still don't have my desktop back to normal.

Can anybody please help?

Hi Excal!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my case.

I've also posted a log from Ewido Security Suite in case that will help.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific describing the problem, but all I can tell you is that there is a blue screen when Windows is starting up and it then goes to a white screen that kind of flashes randomly. When it is one shade I can't interact with the desktop, as if an invisible window is open covering it. And when I right click on it I get a menu as if I was right clicking on a web page.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.


THE FIX

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

12. Run the program CleanUp!

13. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

14. Please post the Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Hi Damsel in distress,

Now comes the tricky part. Make sure you follow these instructions to a T. Do not deviate from them at all, if you do, bad things may happen. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them before you start the fix

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Please go to start>my computer then navigate to this file:

C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll

right click on it and rename it to wininet.old

go to your C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder, rightclick on the wininet.dll present there, choose copy and paste it in your system32-folder.

*Note - It could be possible you will get an error saying the file already exists when you try to paste the good one in your system32-folder.
If it gives an error, just reboot

Reboot

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Windows\System32\wininet.old
C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll

please post and let me know the results.

I am a little confused.

U now have a wininet.old and a wininet.dll in your system32 folder...correct?

If thats the case, contiune with these instructions:

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll


If thats not the case let me know.


Also, if everything goes successful, please do another activescan.

That's right I renamed the file wininet.dll as wininet.old and tried to copy wininet.dll from C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 but there was already a file by that name and the wininet.old file in C:\Windows\System32.

Anyway I removed the wininet.old as you asked but couldn't find the oleadm.dll file. I even performed a search for it. No luck there.

When I did a scan on C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll came up clear:

And something strange happened when I performed the Activescan. It was running and had found an infected file on the C: drive. Then the power was cut (it's a long story). So I turned the PC back on and restarted it but this time no infected file was found. This scan camed up clear as well.

But I still don't have my desktop back to normal.

Desktop you say.......

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.


Reboot, then check your desktop. You will have to set your desktop to the way it was before.

Still no luck...

I merged with the registry using the Smitfraud.reg file as you asked and waited for the "merged successfully" prompt which came. But It came up after a split second, I don't know if that was normal as you said to "wait" for it.

Anyway I don't know if this is helpful but when I right click on my so called desktop I get a typical web page menu. If I click on "View Source" this is what I get:
