Hi guys and gals.. I googled and came up with your site, I've been reading all the resolved posts over the past week, and I took all the fixes, downloaded the programs, did everything in order as instructed and my friend is still getting the problems. I do tech support for a living so I understand procedure, but we are not allowed to fix virus issues on calls, and I use a Mac at home, so I have no experience with these. At any rate here is what i have done, and following will be the hijack this log file taken when we were done with everything, Right now there is no change, we still have the Smith Fruad desktop picture hi jacked and still getting 10 bloodhound popups upon getting online. the only thing that has changed is that the computer is now slower...

When I talked to my friend she had already done a bunch of things I had asked her to do. (It had been a while before getting a reply, so I used your log parser and gave her some instructions, that is awesome by the way...).

So for your info, I am posting my instructions to her, and also her new log file "both.txt" using the expanded version of hijack this after all the steps were complete.

I parsed the new log file and it looks clean except for one thing which was optional, she needs to update to SP2 (but only when we are done), and some Sony Vaio stuff that should have been cleaned up but stuck around... I don't *think* it is trojan related but who knows.

At THIS point she says her desktop hijack error is gone and the screen is now white (she is going to try and set it back to the Windows XP theme, and then go to another one tonight), but the computer is running SUPER slow now which is new... Any ideas? Sorry I didn't catch her before she did all the stuff, hopefully we did good, :tazz: here are my instructions followed by the new log file:

1. Boot the computer in Safe Mode using F8
___________________________________________________
2. In the "HJT_and_more_1" folder, Doubleclick HijackThis, (Make sure to use THIS version, not the other one on your computer).
3. Close ALL open windows except for this application window,
4. Select "Do a system scan only"
5. Put a check mark next to these <15> items:

Looks good actually, but I wouldn't run two Av's resident on one computer.

If I read the log right you are using McAfee and Kaspersky simultaneously, which is not a good idea.

That's cool, I'll have her uninstall Kaspersky, it looks like she is running Norton too though. Did Macafee and Norton merge or do I have two programs to remove? which do you prefer to keep of those two, Norton or Mcafee?

Any ideas about the super slow internet speeds? Could it be related to the AV programs fighting in the background? I did see a new process "ping.exe" that didn't used to be there, could that be a denial of service thing going on?

Also, do you think the "O23 - Service: VAIO Media Video Server" entries that didn't go away are anything to worry about?

In know... too much information can be dangerous to a newbie, I just want to be specific to *hopefully* make it easy on you.

Thanks for any suggestions.

ping.exe was put there by the batch that you ran. No worries there.

Norton NISUM could be only a firewall, so better check that before you uninstall all the Antiviruses and/or the firewall. :tazz:

The VAIO drivers are not something I ever dared mess with. They come with the brand of computers and are probably necessary.

Regardsing the internet speed you can run some test on DSLReports

Alright, thanks for the ping info.

We'll double check what kind of Norton she has, I believe she said she has the antivirus, but she has never renewed the subscription, I'll be sure there's no firewall, and if there is, I'll turn off the anti virus part of the S/W if possible.

I was talking to her and she said that the speed is not actually only on the internet, but within Windows also... Everything is moving really slow since we ran through the steps... any ideas?

Thanks

I'll tell you what I think it is.

If a file gets accessed (used) by any program a resident AV will scan that file to check if it is clean. Each AV that is resident will do that.
An Av uses files as well and each file will be checked by the other AV's etc... etc.....

Do you understand why I advised to run only one resident?

And then try to imagine what happens if a file is recognized as infected.
Or if the signature of a virus in one scanner is recognized by another as a virus. :tazz:

hehe... That's what I thought would be the deal. She tried to remove kaspersky last night using the uninstaller, and it gave her an error that her temp folder wasn't valid, and it wasn't in add/remove progs either. I emailed kaspersky support asking how to delete it manually, we'll see if they reply...

I am assuming I could just check off the kaspersky items in hijack this, and then delete the application folder, but there are probably some dlls hiding somewhere or something else that needs to be done. I hate progs that fight you to uninstall them!

If you've got any "generic" removal instructions for removing programs it would be very appriciated. Thanks for all your help, I promise I'll stop posting soon lol

Well. A Antivirus that is too easy to remove is not worth the electrons it is made off. :tazz:

Check this thread: http://forum.kaspers...?showtopic=1916

Well, you guys did it again! As soon as Kaspersky was removed all the speed came up on the computer again and all the trojans are gone... Being a tech, this has truly been a good learning experience because people are always calling me for tech support, (at my job we're not allowed to fix this type of stuff), now I have the knowledge to help them get rid of these things, and I love my OS X even more now heh.

Thanks for all your help!
