Hi and welcome to Geekstogo.com.

You may wish to print these instructions out as you will have to go into safe mode, and may not have interent connectivity.

You have a number of randomonly named files on your system. We like to start with an online virus and trojan scan. Even though you have antivirus software on your system, it can become corrupted by malware.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

Next, please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check (if present):

next go to your control panel by clicking on Start and choosing control panel, next choose add/remove programs and remove the following programs (if present):

180solutions
elitebar
elitetoolbar

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

and lets us know how your system is working.

problems:

the ewido scan ended early saying that i needed to reboot in order to finish the scan, also I am still getting plenty of pop-ups.

after restarting my computer from safe mode, it booted up and then automatically started up again.

Thanks a lot :tazz:

i didnt' see this earlier, but in order to help us keep your system clean we need
to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

ok, we need to run the entire removal procedure agian, This is why its important to have all your windows updates.

Prior to running it again Please follow this link http://castlecops.com/post106277.html and do as exactly as it says

Next please follow the fix listed. I know you have the programs still, so as long as you didn't dlete the programs, you will be able to skip downloading them.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

Thanks for all your help, but I decided I might as well go with system restore because it was going way out of control. There was about 2 pop ups every second and everytime I closed them some more would pop-up. I figured it was not worth the trouble to scan and scan my computer over again as I did not have a lot of important data. I saved my data to an external source and I system restored. But I have one question. The computer with the problem seems to be prone to a lot of spyware. Was it because I had not updated my windows often? Also besides Spybot S&D, Lavasoft Adware, and HJT is there any other programs I should have downloaded to keep my computer risk free?

Thanks a bunch again.

sorry to hear that it was causing so many issues and you felt the need to restore the system.

The computer with the problem seems to be prone to a lot of spyware. Was it because I had not updated my windows often? Also besides Spybot S&D, Lavasoft Adware, and HJT is there any other programs I should have downloaded to keep my computer risk free?

first off, yes a lot of it was because of not keeping up to date with the windows updates. thats why they issue them, to help protect your computer.

glad you asked the second part, I have the answer for ya :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and kerio personal firewall 4.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
