I tried my hardest to remove this before bugging people in a forum -- but after about 15 hours of work on my computer, I still can't get rid of this thing!

Symptoms:
When I boot up -- IE open automatically to "about:blank", and when I navigate to a real web page, a pop up with various ads comes up (including spyware stuff funny enough) -- it always has the "Only the Best" title on the pop up.

My Norton Anti-virus also pops up a Torjan Horse virus alert. Each time it seems to be a different file name. I locate the file (which is not always available to view in explorer) and run Norton on it but they can never be deleted.

What I have tried:
I went to the Major Geeks website and followed all the instructions for removing a Trojan virus (running 9 different scans on my computer in safe mode). The same symtoms still happen. I ran HijackThis and submitted my log to the Help2Go web site which told me to delete c:\windows\viewmanager folder -- which I did, it still didn't do anything. So now I have run a HijackThis scan a 2nd time but analyizing this code is beyond my skill set (I run a youth orchestra for a living!).

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Steve

Hi BritOnion

Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.
  • Please open My Computer
  • Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
  • Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
  • Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder (do not run HijackThis directly out of the sfx or compressed file).
Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:

Thank Lobos for this helpful reply.

Since posting my original log I had found several sites that were recommending Firefox instead of IE. So I installed this on my computer. Then -- when I came to log at my log again, many things were different -- so I uninstalled it and went back and it returned most of the items but not all of them. I then followed your instructions just fixing the lines from your message which I actually had in my log. After the several scans you also asked me to do things are now much better. No more Only the Best pop-ups and no more Trojan Horse virus warning from my Norton Antivirus. However, when I boot up, I am still getting IE open automatically but it shows the 'i can't find server page' (not about:blank anymore) even though I am connected and from then on in it is no trouble surfing the net.

I have posted my new log below as requested.

Thank you again for your help -- REALLY appreciated!
