Hi

I uninstalled a game from my CP and accidently deleted some dll files. Now I cant watch videos or listen to mp3s. Sometimes my computer stops working when I open websites with flushy ads. I tried to download missing files from the internet into WINDOWS/SYSZTEM, but I dowloaded the wrong ones and now I cant get rid of them because the access is denied.

I dont know what to do Im not that good with computers. I have windows 98, but I dont have the CD. Do you tihnk it will work if I get a CD from someone and try to reinstall Windows 98? Or maybe there's another way to fix this problem.

First, go to Start -> Run and type scanregw and click enter. This will scan your registry for problems.

Next, to remove the dll's installed incorrectly, try restarting your computer in safemode (by tapping F8 after rebooting). You should be able to delete the incorrect dll files. Be very careful you don't delete needed dll's.

If it still can't be removed, you must unregister the file first, so next time it won't load at bootup. To do so, Start -> Run -> type regsvr32 -u (or /u) "file location" (i.e. regsvr32 /u C:\Windows\system32\filename.dll).

I tried to do all the thing you suggested but unfortunatelly none of them worked. When I go to Run and type scanregw I get a message that everything's okay and there are no errors. Its probably because I already tried to fix them before with one of the online programs. So now I dont have any identifiable errors and a lot of the programs still dont run.

Try registering the dll files you've downloaded and installed.

To do so, Start -> Run -> type regsvr32 "file location"
(i.e. regsvr32 C:\Windows\system\filename.dll).

Repeat for every dll file your missing.

Tried to do what you suggested. For the first file "dplayx.dll" I got a message that the file is found, but corrupt, and that I should use PView to get rid of it. Coudlnt find PView on my PC.

And when I typed in the second file "ddraw.dll" I got no messages at all.

Try this:

1. Start -> Run -> type regsvr32 /u C:\Windows\system32\dplayx.dll
2. Restart your computer. Delete dplayx.dll from the C:\Windows\system32\ folder
3. Click Here and download dplayx.dll to your desktop.
4. Unzip the file, and copy to your Windows\system32 folder.
5. Start -> Run -> type regsvr32 C:\Windows\system32\dplayx.dll
5. Restart.

I figured it out, my computer was designed to drive me nuts Nothing seems to work. I keep getting "access denied" messages.

Yep, Im still having problems. After typing what you said in RUN and restarting my computer, I still cant delete those files. Also those files are not in Windows/system32, they're in Windows/System. But in Run I tried typing both system32 and just system.

I resist recommending a reformat and reinstall, as a lot of tech support companies do this routinely when the problem is often easily fixed, but in your case I think its the recommended course of action. Be sure you have any important data backed up first. If you need help with performing a clean installation, just ask.
