I have been unable to set display properties in Windows XP. It was working but now when I right click on the desktop and click properties, all I get is the tab
to change my theme. I am missing the other tabs such as appearance, effects, settings & background. This is also true when I try to click the control panel
item Display Icon. I have already tried system restore but i didn't get any result.

Thanks!

This is an indication that you have a malware infection

.Just to get you started....download the attached file, unzip its contents, and then double click regfix1.reg, say yes to merge, then double click regfix2.reg, and say yes to merge.

Afterwards, please go to the malware forum in my signature and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

I'm sure this happens due to a malware infection. In fact, i try to resolve this problem by following the advice of your experts. It seems I have a serious malware infection.

Thanks for trying to help me.

I had the same problem before, I went through system restore and it all worked fine. If you know when you had this problem you could possibly restore your machine's state to the day before.

your best bet if you would create a new user on your system and move all your files through to the new account WITHOUT moving settings or else that problem would be carried over to the new profile.

There is no attachment because i'm not able to add one. Sorry, i didn't notice this the first time. Otherwise i wouldn't have posted my previous reply. Anyway, i decided to post the content of pol.reg instead of sending the file to you:

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as permitall.reg

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Reboot and check under Properties of your desktop if the Browse button is usable again.

I did this before, tried again today, but the same thing happens everytime: my current theme is changed to windows classic and nothing more. I still can't change my screensaver, appearance or desktop image because the tabs in display options are missing...
