If you did this before then I am real curious what the results will be when you repeat the instructions gerryf gave you.

Can you do that again please?

Regards,

yes, by all means, do it again.

The solution should work because we can see the problem and that will address it.

I followed gerryf instructions and rebooted but it didn't help. The only way i am able to set display properties is by using start->run and:

Display Properties (Background):
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,0
Display Properties (Screen Saver):
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,1
Display Properties (Appearance):
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,2
Display Properties (Settings):
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,,3

Is it possible for some windows files to be missing or corrupted?

neat....how did you determine that?

Let's try this:

start > run
regsvr32 "c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll"
<enter>

change anything?

There is no attachment because i'm not able to add one. Sorry, i didn't notice this the first time. Otherwise i wouldn't have posted my previous reply. Anyway, i decided to post the content of pol.reg instead of sending the file to you:

hm,

ok, so, you're saying that the display property is still missing those tabs, and that windows is lacking all the eye candy?

If you right click on START, choose PROPERTIES, is START MENU radio button selected?

The selected button is classic start menu. This has always been my option.

got a couple questions...in safe mode, do the tabs display?

What kind of videocard?

Had you recently updated a driver for the card?

Yes, the tabs do appear while in safe mode. My video card is NVIDIA GeForce MX/MX 400. I haven't done any driver update recently.

I've noticed something else. After i chose a different appearance, screensaver or background image by using rundll32 commands, all the tabs appear. Then, when i right click the desktop and select properties the tabs are gone.

well, that is very interesting...

let's try this

download this:

http://www.drivercleaner.net/

and the appropriate driver here

http://www.nvidia.co...ers/drivers.asp

Go to control panel > add remove software, remove anything that begins nvidia, shut down, reboot into safe mode.

run driver cleaner pro, and choose the nvidea drivers to be remove

reboot again normally...windows will say found new hardware. Cancel the wizard.

Run the driver installation program you downloaded, reboot

Now what?
