When I boot my computer I get a pop up error message that says Window is looking for a disk. It's the <Cancel><Retry><Continue> type of error box. When I use taskmanager to tell me which program is looking for the disk it says csrss.exe. Any ideas on how to fix this?

how do you know "that" process is doing that?

Can you do a screen capture?

Okay here's a screen capture

Posted Image

Now if I right click on that process it gives me a number of options - one of which is "Go To Process". It then says that the process is csrss.exe, or am I understanding that wrong?

Thanks for your help so far,

Bubba

no, but csrss.exe is such a basic windows function that it can be misleading.

let's try something else.

If I switch users it doesn't make the error window pop up. However if I reboot it does.

I noticed the the time stamp on our postings were very close together so it is possible that I was editing mine while you were posting. Anyway, if I cold boot the computer I get the error no matter which account I'm using, the error does not appear if I just logoff and change users.

well, that is interesting

for the moment, go through your hijack log and check anything with file missing, then check fix and reboot.

Look in C:\

Do you see a autoexec.bat or config.sys?

Has this always occured or is it recent

Only one item in the hijack log with a file missing, checked, fixed and re-booted. Error still there.

No autoexec.bat or config.sys in C:\

This problem started when I changed from Norton Anti-Virus to F-Secure. I removed Norton using the control panel (add/remove program) and installed F-Secure via a download from my ISP. When the error first occured I phoned them, their suggestion was to delete csrss.exe <laughs> I knew they weren't gonna be much help. I then removed F-Secure and re-installed it with a fresh download of the program. Then re-installed Norton Tools minus the Anti-Virus package.

And that's where I am now, slowly pulling out all my hair. Fortunatly it's not a fatal error, just real annoying.

Step 1

Start > Run, type
msconfig
<enter>

On the general tab, select SELECTIVE START UP then uncheck
load system.ini
load win.ini
load startup services
load startup items

Reboot.
Does the error repeat? If not, continue with the next part. If so, go to STEP 2.

If not, Start > Run, type
msconfig
<enter>

check load startup items
Reboot.
Does the error repeat? If not, continue with the next part. If so, go to STEP 2.

If not, Start > Run, type
msconfig
<enter>

check load startup services
Reboot.

If not, Start > Run, type
msconfig
<enter>

check load win.ini

check load system.ini

Report back

-------------------------------------

STEP 2

When you find the error, repeating, you have arrived at the group that is causing the problem.

Leave everything as is and go to the tab with the same name as the one you just re-enabled and uncheck everything you find within the tab....reboot.

Does the probelm recur? If not, check one item and reboot, continuing until you discover the offending application/service

Then report back

Okay here's the good news, using your method I was able to track the problem to qttask.exe. This as you prolly know is part of the Quicktime package, so I uninstall Quicktime, reboot, error gone. <big grin> Thanks.

Now it get weird, download the QT package from the Apple site, install, reboot, error is back. Uninstall, reboot, error gone.

Maybe I'll live without Quicktime.

Thanks for your help so far.

I read somewhere if you rename the qttask.exe on the quicktime folder it solves the problem.But if you want to try another solution to this quicktime annoyance i can search for the link

that is neat....

when you uninstall quicktime, how do you do it?

Add/remove? Do you then remove the files left behind by uninstall routines?

What version of quicktime? What about Itunes?
