I woke one morning several days ago, to find Spysheriff self installed on my computer. I used Spysweeper several times and was after several unsuccessful attempts able to finally get rid of the program (I hope so anyway). However, since that time I have been unable to change my background wallpaper. I can change colors but I can't apply a wallpaper. I know other have had similar problems after being attacked by spysheriff. I have already completed the prereq. The following is my Hijackthis log:

Hi valiant4truth, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

1. Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

2. Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

3. REBOOT your system

4. Please provide a new HJT log as well as update on your screen

Regards,

Trevuren

Thank you! My desktop is now accepting wallpapers after following your instructions. I repeated a check of my computer after disabling SpySweeper. I do have a question about the Negligible stuff found by Ad-Aware SE. Am I supposed to delete those as well, even though they do not pose a threat? Also, the windows and icons on my screen are now... more boxy they they used to be prior to using CleanUp!. Is there any way to change them back to a more XP look rather than classic?

The following is my updated HJT log:

You can delete the negligible items if you want to. Most will return.

As far as regaining your XP Theme, try this:

1. Download Luna.Zip from HERE.

2. Move to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna

3. REBOOT your system

4. Advise as to performance

I downloaded Luna.zip and moved it to the specified folder. However, the appearance of my display remains Windows Classic style. There isn't even an option for Windows XP appearance under display properties anymore. Did you want me to unzip the file or leave it unziped in the folder? Please advise. Thanks.

Well, I extracted the file into the folder and it seems to have resolved the issue. Thanks!

Another thing, ZoneAlarm has been detecting Win32.SillyDl.GP on my computer. It's usually found in the temp folder, and I thought maybe after using CleanUp! it may have gotten rid of it. However, ZA has still been detecting and effectivly treating it. Do you have any suggestions as to how I should deal with this problem? Thanks.

1. Please send fresh HJT log

2. We will commence final cleaning procedures and that may do the trick.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
