I have today somehow been hijacked by antivirus gold. As other users have posted it has taken over the desktop and i simply cannot remove it. I had a small victory in that it placed a red x on the taskbar but by following your help for similar probs i seem to have got rid of that part. However the desktop still screams 'warning' infection blah blah and i keep getting pop ups telling me to buy said programme.

Have run all of the suggested anti programmes (which found a lot of stuff) but they have failed to rescue my desktop from this [bleep] of a hijacker. Please help.

Hijack this log below:

ok on top of that i just had a report of the virus 'Win32.ZMist' in the windows Temp folder. I think it must be somehow related to the antivirus gold problem as i havnt had a virus on the comp for months. It was deleted by the antivirus (GData) programme but still....

ok had another go but still no luck. I dont see how all of these anti virus programmes can miss something that is seemingly so obvious. I think it might help if i just throw the comp out of the window. Or maybe throw it through the window of antivirus golds offices.-

Hi obi34 and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save Report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know how your computer is running :tazz:

Firstly thanks for your help so far. Did all that you asked. Ewido found 4 probs and then panda found another 3. I hope it has gone but to be honest ive no idea. As yet ive had no pop up from antivirus gold so fingers crossed. Heres the 3 reports:

Oh and another thing. I havnt tried to reset the desktop wallpaper yet but it keeps changing from light brown to white and back! The warning message has gone though.

hmmmm, that desktop should have been fixed. Lets try this one.

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merg ed successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking

Let me know if that works ;)

Thanks,

hmmmm, that desktop should have been fixed.

Thanks,

:tazz:

Thanks!

That seems to have done the trick. It didnt immediatly return to the old pic but did when i changed it in the display settings.

I cant thank you enough. Your help is greatly appreciated. Unfortunatly i dont have much money so cant make a donation :tazz: (yet) and my cars fan has just stopped working so now i have even more money to pay out just to get to work.

Nevertheless thank you very much.

Don't worry about it, we are here to help ;)

Please apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

After you are done this, please post another HiJackthis log.
