I've followed all instructions in the "You Must Read This Before Posting" topic. In addition I ran the removal tools Symantec offers for the various problems I started out with. Ewido removed several problems (and I notice this tool is no longer on the "You Must Read" page?)

Many things were removed and I'm not having any visible problems with my computer functions now. However, I want all traces of the adware/spyware removed so I can Install XP Service Pack 2 and take all measures to keep from being reinfected.

My Norton Antivirus Scan

indicates I have the following in the RECYCLER\NPROTECT folder (I went in and tried to delete, but it was still present in next virus scan):

clientax.dll - Adware.180Search (C:\RECYLER\NPROTECT\00414851.cab)
Dc1.cab - Adware.180Search (same URL - says compressed file in above path)

Nail.exe - Adware.BetterInternet (keep deleting this one, ran Norton's tool and it comes back - can't recall exactly where this one resided)

Here's the HiJack this log:

Yes, I still cannot get rid of this Nail.exe file. Sorry for the delay in reply, I was out of town.

All other problems are fixed, but this still remains:

c:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Norton Anti-virus finds and says it deletes it. Ewido finds and says it cleans it.

TDS3 says "No Trojan Mutexes found" but also shows the file in the above location.

AdAware shows in registry scan the file that HJT also shows:

F2 - REG: system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C;\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

I didn't want to just delete that without getting advice to do so.
=================
HJT log is below - thanks for any help you can give me in getting rid of this.

You have a nasty nail infection, and i don't mean on your fingers and toes :tazz:

We are going to hit this with a big hammer.

Firstly please create a new folder on your C drive (for example C\HJT). Install HJT into that folder and run it from there. That way it can create backups if required.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://dknoppix.com/...oad.cgi?Nailfix
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find .System Startup Service (SvcProc)
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. This may take some time, so go grab a coffee. Once it finds the first issue tick the box for all. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Now using windows explorer locate and delete the following files/folders if found.

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Now run Cleanup

Restart your computer in normal mode and

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Rescan with HJT and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan and Panda

I'm so relieved to be starting on a fix.

The Nailfix link to the Tech with DK site doesn't work - he's making some site changes which is probably why. Can you send me another link? I'm looking on the site but haven't found Nailfix yet and want to make sure I get the right utility.

Also, in reading another post that fellow was having a lot of trouble with Ewido crashing and I had the same problem myself a week or so ago - very unstable. I'll try reinstalling if I have the same problem again.

Now on to the rest of the preparations.

Thanks

Another note while waiting to find Nailfix - the ActiveScan site is also not coming up for me. May be a temporary glitch with servers, but is there another alternative to doing the Panda scan after I've taken care of the rest of your instructions?

Thanks,

Jan

It was also nice when I restarted the computer to get a message "Windows cannot find the file C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe" - or at least I guess that's good news.

If my system is clear now, should I be OK to go ahead and install XPSP2?

BTW, Ewido ran fine in the Safe Mode, but crashed in Normal mode - it opens up and the program window just disappears. When I first opened it, after 3 seconds I got one of those "encountered a problem and had to close unexpectedly". Is this a common complaint? I guess I'll take it up with them in exploration of possibly purchasing.

Thanks - fingers crossed here!

Re ewido, we have frequest problems of it crashing. There is no reason to purchase it, as it remains active and updatable after the trial period expires. The only functuality you lose is the realtime protection, but you can still manually scan your machine to use all it's other functions.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

You are now clear for SP2

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
