Hi..I went through Steps 1, 2 and 4 of the malware removal instructions. I did not run step 3 since I have Windows2000 and that update seemed to apply only to WindowsXP. Please let me know if there is something else I should run. My VPN connection is still not working and I also still have the message on startup saying WrOS.exe application failed to initialize. In addition I have trouble shutting down or restarting Windows and have to use the power switch to shut down. Here is my Hijack This log..would greatly appreciate any help!
Thanks, Amrita

Please find this file:
C:\WINNT\System32\\DRIVERS\ETC\Hosts
and rename it to hosts.bak

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
To disable AdWatch:

Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {55E301E5-BA44-4095-BB0B-14E0123CCF71} - C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\pxepi.dat (file missing)

Then reboot and let me know if that restored the connection.

Hi Pieter,

When I went to look for C:\WINNT\System32\\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts, there was already a file called hosts.bak. I deleted that file and then renamed the hosts file to hosts.bak. Not sure if that was the correct thing to do. Then I went through all the other steps you had listed and I still have the connectivity problem as well as that WrOS.exe error on startup. Here is my Hijackthis log after the fix. Thanks so much for your efforts - I really appreciate it. Amrita

Good job sofar.

For the connectivity please download and run: http://www.spychecke...nsockxpfix.html

To find what is causing the error:
  • Download the Registry Search Tool.
  • Unzip the contents of RegSrch.zip to a convenient location.
  • Double-click on RegSrch.vbs.
  • If you have an anti-virus installed it might prompt you about a running script. Please ignore this warning and allow the script to run.
  • In the "Enter search string (case insensitive) and click OK..." box paste this string:
    • WrOS.exe
  • Click "OK" to search the registry for that string.
  • Wait for a few minutes while it completes the search.
  • Click "OK" to open the results in WordPad.
  • Copy and paste the entire results into your next post.

Uhoh,

Is Verizon still your provider?

And if so, do you have their software stored on the computer somewhere so you can reinstall it?

Hi..Verizon is still my provider..I have the install disks.
I did reinstall it once earlier and it didnt help..but that was before I cleaned out the PC.
Let me know if you think I should try reinstalling it.

Thanks, Amrita

I think it would help.

Wros.exe is certainly one of their files and it is missing, so it should at least help against that. And I have a feeling it might restore your connection as well.

Hi Pieter

I uninstalled and reinstalled the DSL software and I no longer have the WRos.exe message but my VPN still does not work although I can get onto Internet Explorer without any problems.
There is also something up with my Norton because the Autoprotect and Automatic live update is disabled and even if I change theoptions and enable those features, they get disabled when I exit Norton.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Amrita

Can you disable AdWatch before you make those changes and see if that is enough to make them permanent?

Also check the permissions in ZA to see if there is anything in there that could be blocking your connection.

Hi,

It turns out that my version of Norton was not supported by Norton anymore. So I uninstalled it and upgraded to Norton 2005 and installed that. Now it does get activated on startup, however it's live update feature is disabled and will not enable. According to their tech site, this is because there is a problem with my Internet connectivity..could it be related to my VPN connectivity problem?

The one thing I have noticed is that when I look at Network and Dialup Connections, all I have is 2 entries..one saying Make new connection and the other saying Local Area Connection. However on my kid's computer, where VPN is working, when I look at the Network properties I see several VPN adapters..am I missing files?

Thanks for your help.

That depends. Does your computer connect directly to the internet or through one of the other computers in the network?

And can I have a look at your new log?

Hi Pieter,

Thanks for your quick response. My computer connects direcly to the Internet. Also I was on the Norton database checking for the Automatic Liveupdate problems and one of the things they suggested was to check if the Windows Task Scheduler was working. As a test they suggested to add a new task and see if it works. I tried to do that and got an error msg saying that my Task Scheduler Service was not working.

Here is my latest log.

Thanks so much. Amrita

To start the Task Scheduler service.

Click Start > Run > type services.msc > OK

The Services window will open.

Scroll down through the list till you find Task Scheduler

Rightclick that line and click Properties.
In the Properties screen Set the Startuptype to Automatic and click the Start button.

If all goes well try and see if the Updater will work.
If you get an error let me know which one exactly.

Regards,

Hi Pieter,

When I went right clicked on Properties the Startuptype was already set to Automatic but the Service Status said Stopped. When I tried to start it I got the msg saying

Could not start the TAsk Scheduler Service on Local Computer.
Error 1717: The interface is unknown.

Any ideas - this is so upsetting!!!

:tazz:

Thanks, Amrita
