I am trying to install new programs and getting this message "Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not currently installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

Perhaps in my zealous need to clean, my bf's littered pc I removed something that was not litter. Trouble is, I just did it a few days ago and even with system restore from 1 wk, 2 wks ago, I can't go back to what the pc was a few days before. I can't get it from a free download from MS because it's part of a package deal it seems with XP, not so with earlier versions. Is it true what they say? you can never go back.

I think this can be fixed. First click Start, click run, and type "services.msc" without the quotes. Hit enter. Scroll down the list until you get to "Windows Installer". Right Click it, click properties. Make sure startup type is set to manual. You might have some how disabled it. Let us know if that works or not.

I did switch the position from automatic to manual and I even restarted the program, however I'm still receiving the same error. If it's still in this folder, does that mean I haven't erased a necessary file? (please say yes).

I could say yes but I'm not that sure. Try this click start, run, type "sfc.exe /scannow" without the quotes. Hit enter. This will scan your files and check to see if there are any corrupt ones. Fix everything it brings up. Hopefully this will work. Oh ya you have to insert the windows disk into the drive when you run this command. Let me know.

I know that I should probably have the install cd with me, but it's at the computer's previous owner's house, slightly putting a damper on that solution at the moment. (I'm picking it up in the morning.)

However, I did contact the ms chatline support to see if what they had to say, and they had me run through the same procedure, and eventually had me go in the command screen from Start/Run menu and type in a few commands. Seems as though my installer may have become unregistered somehow. I suppose we re-registered it that way. The commands were:

Log on to your computer as an administrator.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type msiexec.exe/unregister, and then press ENTER.
4. Type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.

Now its all Chinese to me but perhaps it will help someone else in the future
