Hi mgozalbo
It looks like you have not disabled Windows Messenger, this is why you are getting the popup's.
Windows Messenger, you can disable it as follows: Start -> Programs -> Windows Messenger -> Tools -> Options -> Preferences. Uncheck "Run this program when Windows Starts". This is reguarded as a Dangerous Security risk.
(This is not part of MSNMessenger.)
Now disable Messenger service > Clik Start > Controll Panel > Administrative tools > Services > see attachment.

latest report is so far, as I am using the computer, no pop ups have appeared. Fingers crossed. IE however still not working.
I tried to disable Windows Messenger following the instructions but I didn't find it under Start > Programs > etc... (see picture programmes.jpg attached)
I think I managed to do the second part (disabling Messenger service), see picture services.jpg attached.

the pop ups haven't come back
, but I am still crossing fingers.
IE is still not working.
I did the scan with the tool that you mentioned and found something, I attach a screengrab of what it was, I then clicked on "clean".

hey thatman,
ie is still not working, I couldn't reinstall it as per the instructions (see my problems in the post above). I don't know if I was doing something wrong (I wasn't sure what I was meant to type on the textfield in the "Run" dialog box) or if it is that there is something corrupt in the computer's system

Please download this utility (yes, I know. Yet ANOTHER utility!):
http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.vbs
Save it to your the C:\Documents and Settings\Helen\Desktop\MGMAntivirus folder and double click it. Click Yes when prompted. It will appear as though nothing is happening but eventually, a "pop-up" will appear that the scan is done and will tell you where the report is. Find that report (should be in the MGMAntivirus folder) and post the results here.
Lastly, open IE and select Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings button. Take a screen shot of that screen.
Next, place a check mark in the Use a proxy server for your LAN... and click the Advanced button. Take a screen shot of that screen as well and paste both screen shots here, along with the silent runners log and a new hjt log.
