Hi there,

I have had a recent problem with my home PC.

It just stopped booting up, it seems like it loops but never gets to the boot up stage.

It is also making a clicking noise but I'm not sure if it is the HD. It sounded like the Cd Drive. I unplugged it, and the clicking stopped, however the computer still wouldn't boot up.

Any suggestions.

Cheers,
Ray

what is the last thing that you see before it restarts? do you see the Windows screen with the bar moving across the bottom?
did you add any devices or a new hardware recently? it could be a faulty hardware or a conflict.

it doesn't even get to that stage, nothing appears on the monitor at all.

I hadn't used the PC for a while as I use my notebook mostly. So I hadn't installed anything.

The PC has had this issue before but would always boot up eventually after a few retry's but now it's given up the ghost???

No beeps, just the clicking noise on a loop. And the power light doesn't seem to come on. But the light on the CD and DVD drives are on and flashing during attempted boot up?

If I were a betting man, I'd say your power supply has gone....a power supply has three "rails" 12volt, 5 volt, and 3.3 volt

One, two or all three can go.

It sounds like your 12volt is still functioning, which is why the cdrom and harddrives and fans spin up.

The 5 volt is working, too, as the power switch is working

The 3.3volt runs the videocard, cpu and the memory.

I have seen this happen multiple times--including it occuring infrequently, and eventually booting, and then completely giving up the ghost.

Thanks for that, I'll get another one and see if that works. :-)
