I've tried to run memtest 3.0 once, and it froze after five minutes and fifteen seconds. Later, after everything had presumably been running normally, I left a Yahoo web page up along with AIM, and after about an hour when I came back to check for someone I was expecting on AIM, everything had frozen. Ctrl - Alt - Del, would do nothing.

I'm beginning to think you're right that there's something bad wrong in the motherboard. I'll keep after IBM. (Right now I'm running memtest 3.0 on a very trusty old HP laptop - still running after 33 minutes.)
