I have worked my way through the procedures to clean and remove the malware detected by the applications referenced in your instructions. I am still experiencing recurring popups attributable to Aurora. I have copied the results of the HJT routine below.

Additionally, I was unable to delete a Trojan using Trend Housecall. The message suggested that it coulde not be deleted due to it's being in use. It appeared again on a second pass with the same stubborness. I am not sure if it must be addressed in an alternate manner.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection and a nasty Nail infection and i don't mean the one's on your fingers and toes :tazz:

we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problems. Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.

Download a free 14 day trial of ewido from the link below. Install it and start it up. Follow the prompts to upgrade it, then close it down.

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster

Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
Now close About:Buster

Update CWShredder

Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
Click Check For Update
Close CWShredder

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find: System Startup Service (SvcProc) .
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Exit the Services utility.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:

Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
Reboot your computer into safe mode again

Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. This may take some time, so go grab a coffee. Once it finds the first issue tick the box for all. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they are there. Some may have been removed by earlier procedures.

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Next restart HJT and click on Misc Tools button, then select Delete an NT service

In the popup box paste the following into the box.

SvcProc then ok it

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, with the other logs, so we can sort out any remnants

The ewido log is posted below. I did not see the instruction for Panda in your instructions. I did not run Panda. I also had some difficulty with the services.msc command when I could not locate the "Stop" button to stop the service.

There is definitely a noticeable improvement evidenced by the lack of pop-ups. The system does seem to be responding slowly, though.

Also, on reboot there is a message that tells me cfgmgr52.dll (I think) is not found. Did I kill something that I shouldn't have?

Hi again,

Please carry out the Panda scan (link at bottom of my first post of instructions) then post the log back.

Re the missing file, no you haven't killed anything you shouldn't have, that is part of the malware your pc has and we will sort that out once i get all the requeted reports to see what still needs to be tackled.

Now I get it, Active Scan is Panda (duh). It did not run the first few times that I tried to start it. Finally, I noticed that it was asking me to add ActiveX, which I did.

* Save it to your desktop.

Now reboot into Safe Mode.

Scan with HJT and check the following entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cfgmgr52] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll,DllRun

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Rescan with HJT and post the log back.

Hello usetobe,

The system seems to be running without interuption. If someone would have told me that I could have done this via the internet, I wouldn't have believed them. I am a hands-on person, but this was more than I thought could be achieved. Thank you so much for the instruction. I believe that I learned much about how this stuff can imbed itself in the system. I am very grateful.

BTW, do you have any insight as to why my speakers do not work. I will reload the drivers from the system disk(s) unless there is something else you might recommend.

Hi again Bob,

Re speakers not working, it could be a myriad of things that you will need to go through.....1. Are the plugged in correctly, 2. Have you been inside case and maybe knocked soundcard or cables. 3. Muted in Settings. (check Sound and Audio device in control panel to check not muted or volume turned off/down). 4. Corrupt soundcard installation.(reinstall driver). Other than that i'm lost as i'm malware specialist. If you get no resolve you coyuld try our techs in hardware section.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
