[KAOZ]

I had Spysheriff and I got rid of it. But I cant get my homepage to be what I want it to be. I ran Adware,Spybot,CWShredder and did virus scans and I still cant fix it.I also cant to fix my wallpaper.Its blue and it wont allow me to choose a wallpaper of my choosing.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Do NOT run it yet.Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster

• Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
• Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
• Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
• If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
• Now close About:Buster

Update CWShredder

• Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
• Click Check For Update
• Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:

• Click Begin Removal.
• It will begin to check your computer for malicious files.
• AboutBuster will finish and open a new page. Follow the instructions for protection on that page.
• Shut down AboutBuster. A log should have been created.Please Save this log and copy it in your next post.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan! (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Excal, I did what you said and the problem hasnt gone away.CWShredder didnt find a problem and neither did about buster.But Im having a problem running ActiveScan.I click on to scan All my computer but the scan is done in 4 seconds and it didnt scan anything.Is there any other antivirus scanner that I could use?Thanks for your help.

When I open IE, the homepage is always About:Blank.I reset it on the Internet Options but when I restart the computer it comes back.

Hi KAOZ,

When you open IE, what exactly does the page look like? Does it say anything at all, or is the page totally blank?

If it is totally blank, you do not have an infection. Something is blocking the change of your home page. My guess would be Microsoft AntiSpyware. This has a anti-browser hijacking built in. So if microsoft antispyware sees your home page as about:blank, then it will keep it that way until you change in their program.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

1. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

2. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

3. Open HiJack and do a scan.

4. Put a Check next to the following items:

O21 - SSODL: Mcafee SecurityCenter - {98BF672A-8B9D-5FE1-7720-B6FCDEB34AD1} - c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\shared\windavp32.dll

5. click the Fix Checked box

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

Avast

IE/Spyad


A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot
