I have somehow managed to get Spy Sheriff and Aurora/Nail.exe on my computer. I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, cwshredder, ActiveScan, and Norton Antivirus (all in normal and safe mode), but none of them have been able to get rid of anything. I ran HijackThis and will include the log below. I would greatly appreciate any help!!

Impressive collection you got there. :tazz:
Let's see how much we can get rid of in one blow.

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Then download and install the Nialfix from: http://users.pandora...chy/nailfix.exe

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

After Cleanup! is finished:
  • Run the Nailfix
  • Run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit Ewido
Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Start Menu\Programs\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Application Data\Install.dat
C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe

*NOTE* user account is not the actual name of that folder. The name of that folder will be the name of your computer profile.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

After the merged successfully prompt, using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder:

C:\Windows\Prefetch

If there are any files inside the Prefetch folder, delete ALL of them. (Do NOT delete the folder. Just delete the files inside.)

Reboot your computer.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Post the report from Ewido and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

Regards,

Thanks for your help!!!! I have control over my desktop now and my computer seems to be functioning well for the most part. I do still have one noticeable problem: when I try to do a search of my computer for a file, it says "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup." I had associated this with all the spyware/virus issues since they occured at the same time. Is this problem associated or do you know how to fix that?

Here is my Ewido report:

Ewido did delete one legitimate file:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Verizon Online\ConnMgr\Verizon Online.exe

Restore the backup for that one.

Download: DelDomains.inf
Should the link above display the text instead of downloading the file, then copy & paste the text into notepad and save the file as DellDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Click Start > Run type services.msc > OK
In the list of services find:
stchost.exe (moto)
Rightclick that line and choose Properties.
On the General tab Stop and set the service to disabled.
In HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > Delete an NT service
In the dialog box paste: moto

For the search problem:
Click Start > Run > copy&paste [b]regedit.exe /e C:\doggyfiles.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions\ShellFind" > OK

This will create the file C:\doggyfiles.txt
Post the content of that file.

Thanks for the help. Unfortuntately I can't do much of what you just suggested. I did restore the file that Ewido deleted, and I downloaded and installed DelDomains.inf

However, when I try to run services.msc, it gives me the following error: MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\services.msc. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later verson of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

For the search problem I typed/copied in: [b]regedit.exe /e C:\doggyfiles.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions\ShellFind" under run and it gave me the following error: Windows cannot find '[b]regedit.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

Any suggestions?

Yep. Tell me to watch the typo's. :tazz:

This is the command to copy:

regedit.exe /e C:\doggyfiles.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions\ShellFind"

Sorry 'bout that.

Check if this file exists on your computer:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\services.msc

Let me know,

Now when I type/copy in your doggy file command, it does not give me an error. However, it also does not put doggyfiles.txt into my C:\ folder. It seems to do nothing that I can see.

Yes, there is a file C:\WINDOWS\System32\services.msc on my computer. When I tried to open it from there it gave me the same error: MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\services.msc. This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later verson of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file.

Thanks :tazz:

OK that means the registry key does not exist.
That could be a cause for the problem, so we will add it.

Copy the part in bold below and save it as findfix.reg
Set filetype to "All files"

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions\Static]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions\ShellFind]
@="{61E218E0-65D3-101B-9F08-061CEAC3D50D}"

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

The second problem might be solved by logging in with Administrator rights (if you are not at the moment) or installing XP SP2 (which we will do once we are convinced you are clean)

Post a new HijackThis log and let me know if you can use the "find files" again.

I successfully created the findfix.reg file and merged it with the registry. I also put the command you had previously given into run and found C:\doggyfiles.txt, which now reads:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\FindExtensions\ShellFind]
@="{61E218E0-65D3-101B-9F08-061CEAC3D50D}"

I am still not able to find files or anything under Search. I am using Start>Search, and it gives me the error: "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup."

My new HijackThis log is:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Try this please.
Find this file: C:\Windows\Inf\Srchasst.inf and rightclick it.
From the rightclick menu choose "Install".

Reboot and try the Search again.

Note: the inf folder is hidden by default. Look here if you need to unhide it: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=192

OK. So the files should no longer be missing.

Now click Start > Run > copy&paste
regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll

You should get notified when the registration was successfull.
It may take a reboot for the changes to kick in.

Before we set off an a long search can you install SP2 for IE and XP ?

That will replace/renew a lot of system files and might solve the problems in doing so.
