I am running WinXP Home and I currently have 40 GB of total space (I know, I know, I haven't gotten around to upgrading, so shhhhhhh) and on my C: drive it shows I have about .99GB left. I DO NOT have 39 GB's worth of programs/songs/videos/etc.etc. I want to know if my comp is just reading the drive wrong or something, or files aren't getting deleted. Any help greatly appreciated :D (BTW, Windows folder is only 4.22 GB's big and ProgramFiles is only 4.78 GB big <_< )

Hi Kozmo.
Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

I did what you said, and I knew it wouldn't solve my problem. Disc cleanup only detected about 500mb worth of files that I could have deleted. That doesn't make up for the 20 or so GB's that I am missing. Someone on another message board said it had to do with a virus that eats away at the disc space you have, but I have been through various other virus programs over the years and I have yet to detect such a virus. Any further help would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance.

I really need more information Kozmo. A Recycle bin from Norton for example would protect deleted files for however long you set it to. So the space on your hdd remains the same. If you think there is a problem post a Hijack This Log and we can have a look for you.
Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Hi kozmo. Admin has indeed looked at your log. Therefore it is clean. So back to the storage problem. Right click your folders to find exactly which one is harbouring the gigabites that you've lost. When you have more info, let us know.

Well, these are the standout folders with atleast a GB of space in it or more just looking at the C:\ directory:

Documents and Settings: 6.77GB total
Program Files: 4.79GB total
WINDOWS: 4.21GB total

These are the only oustanding folders with a GB or more, they total to about 15.77GB. I don't understand where else the other 20+ could have gone <_<

go to 'START' >>>'SETTINGS'>>>'CONTROL PANEL'>>>'ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS'>>>'COMPUTER MANAGEMENT'

Click once on 'DISC MANAGMENT' and let me know the status;capacity;free space and any other information you see here about your drive that you think will be useful. You may want to check the drive for errors.
Thanks
