Hi,

I have Win 98 and win xp dual boot system
I have a lot of mails on my OE 6 in win 98 ..
however theres' somethin corrupt..
so i wish to delete format every thin and go for a fresh installl
And can i export messages in OE 6 to say a newly installed OE 6?
and do these websites help?

I'm not running Windows 98 at this time, but you don't need to export anything, or use any special tools. Just save the folder files on eg a CD before reinstalling.

First of all, you need to set Windows to display all files and folders. This is done in Windows Explorer, in the menu View/Settings, if I'm not mistaken.

The files have the extension .dbx. So to make sure you get all files, click Start/Search/Files and folders. Enter this in the filename space and click "Search now":
*.dbx

The search result is all files that exist on your computer, for all profiles (if you have more than one) and both current and obsolete/backups/archives.
These are the files you need to save. If you plan on putting them on a CD and they take up more than 700 MB, use WinZip or a similar program to compress them. The compression rate is often incredible on these files.

thx. for ya reply..
but some clarifications..
I have OE 6 installed .. ok.. i did find all the *.dbx files
They all amounted to (say) about 17 mb Thats all!!

I'll then format my hdd
I'll install a new copy of Win 98
install OE 6 as well
now how do i import in these messages..(which are in so called .dbx files)??
Am i missin' sumthin'?

within oulook express go to File -> Import -> messages
and import your old .dbx files to your new mailbox.

thx that was kinda dumb of me...
but surely the file sizes are 2 small.. the other guy was talkin of file sizes of upto 700 mbs..
what abt that?

The best thing you can do to check if these are the files (12 MB sounds quite low, especially if you've been e-mailing some funny pictures and other attachments), is to move the files. Just go to the folder where the files are (use Explorer for this, so you'll find the folder again), and drag the files to eg the folder above. Then start OE. If OE can't find the home folders, these files should be the ones.
Several of the 40 people I support at my extra work have e-mail files of more than 1 GB, and it's even worse at my day-time work, with up to three GB.
