I am getting a blue screen on the desktop that says that gives a security warning saying that
a fatal error in IE has occurred. The error is caused by Trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c. System cannot function properly. Scan system with anti-virus or spyware to remove it.

Also immediately it opens another window saying that

Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

This message keeps appearing again and again and doesn't allow me to do any work on my system. Only for a short time when the message has yet not appeared, I can open something else. If I manage to open another program during that time, I can work in the opened program. But I cannot work on any other program, unless I click on the Windows Explorer error window and then start the new program immediately by the time it tries to give the error message again.

I cannot open control panel as clicking on the link gives error
Windows cannot find (null). make sure the filename and path are correct.

I am sure I haven't made any changes to the link. And this link used to work earlier.

I have run HijackThis and given below is the log file generated.
Also please note that I have Windows XP professional edition with no service pack installed. I am not able to install the service pack because it gives an error or just hangs while trying to upgarde to service pack.
I had tried upgrading earlier long before I had this trojan-spy problem.

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. We may need it later.

Download Ewido Trojan’s and malware remover http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
This setup contains the free as well as the plus-version of the ewido security suite. Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I)
When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Run Ewido full scan. Save the scan.log.

Run the spifix

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure all are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes

Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin.When the scan has finnished click the close button
