Try also updating your card driver.

Did both.

The internet connection works fine now.

Before I did the things you suggested, I removed the Windows update that had downloaded and been installed two days earlier, rebooted and the problem was gone. I then did as you suggested and ran some of the other tools as well, particularly the cleanup tool. Gave me back 10+GB of hard drive space. Wow!
