The Symantec web site instructions seem to be off the mark. Symantec Antivirus keeps flagging the virus but can't remove it. Ad Aware, restore off, safe mode... no avail.

July 8 2005 update:
After examining several posts I realized that the reason that us Desktophijack.b victims have had such trouble is simply due to our inability to delete, quarantine, or rename the infected wininet.dll. I found that under XP SP2, annyway, Safe Mode alone wasn't enough, but Safe Mode with Command Prompt was. Renaming in that mode worked, after which copying in a replacement from.... /i386 prevented subsequent malfunction. At least for me the problem is no solved.
