I am working on my parents computer because they have a virus, if not many. I've told them time and again not to click everything, but parents will be parents. I noticed on one of their profiles was a blue screen of a fatal error for their background. I've run all the cleanups your site has told me to. I didn't want to go through this, I thought I'd be able to do it on my own, but I guess not. Could you please help? Here is my HJT log:

[*]Please download LSPfix and save it to the Desktop and unzip it.

[*]Run LSPfix and place a check against the I know what I am doing checkbox.

Highlight every instance of the following names and move them from the Keep to the Remove panel. Be sure to move nothing other than the files listed below!

flsmngr.dll

When done, click on Finish to exit the program; do not use the X in the top right-hand corner as nothing will happen!

[*]Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - Global Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O16 - DPF: {88D758A3-D33B-45FD-91E3-67749B4057FA} (Sinstaller Class) - http://dm.screensave.../sinstaller.cab

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\sinstaller.cab

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

When I restarted their computer in safe mode I could not find the sinstaller.cab, I searched the whole computer for it. But in any event here is the new HJT log:

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

I still have a problem though. One of the profiles on the computer, that i found a message as his desktop, still has a problem. In his properties for things such as desktop, screensaver, etc., only has screen saver and appearance. I don't have an option to change back his desktop.

Please follow the instructions below

Please RIGHT-CLICK: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Everything appears to be fine but under my brothers profile, he still does not have the option of changing his desktop background in the desktop properties.
