My PC has become infected with Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smit.fraud.c and a red/grey circle with a white exclamation mark appears in the system tray everytime I boot up.

I tried the instructions here:

http://www.geekstogo..._Log-t2852.html

This seemed to work but then I couldn't run Hijack This (A required .DLL file, MSVBVM60.DLL, was not found)

I also tried the instructions at:

http://www.geekstogo...=0

but could only get as far as the running of KillBox.exe whereby the same DLL was missing.

Can you help??

Thanks
Kev

Hi Kev and welcome
If you get this error while running or installing a program, it means that you need to upgrade the version of Visual Basic installed on your computer to version 6.

Click Here to download what you need

Save the file to your desktop. When finished downloading double click to run.

Thanks for that. It did the trick.

I have run killbox, downloaded and run hoster, DelDomains.inf and CleanUp!

I then ran Active scan and got the following log:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\INTEL32.EXE
Spyware:Spyware/ISTbar No disinfected Windows Registry
Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wp.bmp

Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\oleadm.dll

Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wp.bmp
Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\uninstIU.exe
What shall I do now as the problems haven't been fixed by Active Scan?

Hi Kev,
Couple issues here to take care of,

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

This will likely be a few step process in removing the malware that has infected your system. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

You have a nasty CoolWebSearch infection. First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download SpSeHjfix Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files.Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Hi,

Thanks for the instructions.
When I try and run Aboutbuster to get the update I get the following message:

Run-time error '339':
Component 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' or one of its dependancies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

Nice work Kev, Lets see if we can get the balance of this cleaned up for you,

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
===================================================
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {355E3AC1-E817-11D9-9B08-02E003EC5D0C} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DFND.DLL (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

.

===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi again,

Thanks for the latest round of instructions. I managed all that except for the Control Panel part - I couldn't find a Desktop tab on the Display window.

Here is the Panda ActiveScan log. I couldn't find an autoclean box but I guess auto-disinfect does the same...

Hi Kev,
Do you have control of your desk top ?
  • Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

  • Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intel32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intel32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\PROGRAM FILES\PSGUARD\PSGUARD.EXE

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

  • Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intel32.exe
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\PSGUARD\PSGUARD.EXE <--Delete Folder

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.
Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hi again,

Hope you're not getting too fed up with me and my PC problems!!

I did as you said - I couldn't remove the PSGUARD.EXE or the PS GUARD folder as it wasn't there.

I ran the Panda Avctive scan again and got the following:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected Windows Registry
Adware:Adware/PsGuard No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\PSGuard.com

Hope you're not getting too fed up with me and my PC problems!!

Not at all Kev,,,

Looking much better ! Your HJT log is clean, a couple minor clean ups left to do

How is the computer running ?

*Please open notepad and save these instructions, Name it something you will remember
*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\PSGuard.com
C:\WINDOWS\uninstIU.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Restart your computer, Check both Ad-aware and Spybot for updates and run a scan with both of them, Fix all that is found with Ad-aware and fix anything found in red with spybot,
Restart your computer
Resacn with Active and let us know what it comes back with,

Hi,

Computer seems to be running fine. Nothing obvious to say there is spyware remaining.

The activescan log reveals just one problem with the registry;

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/Smitfraud No disinfected Windows Registry
Is there anyway of fixing this?

Thanks,
Kev

Hi Kev sorry for the late reply,
The item Active is finding is likely an orphaned key, Really not much to be concerned with,

Nice job your log is clean !
How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection

Download the following program, For keeping crap off your system to begin with
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests. Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox. Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Download Spyware Blaster

Keep AD-Aware. and Spybot 1.3 handy, Check them for updates prior to running and run them weekly
Same with your Anti Virus,

For an added check run an online virus scan, you can use one of the 2 below,
TrendMicro's HouseCall
ActiveScan

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program
Download and install Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Remeber to Check Windows for updates

Probably a good time to create a new restore point See Here Name it clean or something like that,
